This week, we started our new History topic which is all about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings!
We began our new topic by thinking about what happened when the Romans left Britain and a new age began. We considered some of the questions that people would have faced, such as who would make the laws, where people would live and how communities would be organised. We know that there is lots for us to discover about this period of British history!
We were introduced to the Bayeux Tapestry and discovered that, although it is often associated with the Norman Conquest, it actually depicts events at the end of the Anglo Saxon era. We explored a digital version of the tapestry, noticing its incredible length, detail and the way it tells a historical story through a series of scenes. We discussed what we could see and began to make our own observations and interpretations. We also saw ways in which the Tapestry has been recreated and redefined over time and we know that it’s on display in London right now which is really exciting!
We then worked collaboratively to begin creating our own Bayeux Tapestry inspired sections using collage. Each group was given a different section to recreate and had a range of materials to choose from. We had to organise ourselves, share ideas and think carefully about how we could use our individual strengths to contribute to the finished piece.
Our work is still in progress! We will continue to add detail using colouring pencils and other mixed media, developing our sections and bringing our class tapestry to life. We can’t wait to see how it comes together!
