This week, Year 2 began an exciting new History topic all about The Great Fire of London, as part of our learning journey exploring London Then and Now.
To begin our topic, we discovered that the Great Fire started on Pudding Lane in a bakery. We enjoyed some delicious baked goods as we watched the fire break out and imagined what it might have been like to be there in 1666!
The children then began asking lots of fantastic questions about the Great Fire of London. They were curious to find out when it happened, what caused the fire to start and how much damage it caused. We also explored what life was like in London in 1666 and discovered that there were no organised fire services and very little fire safety in place. We were all very shocked to learn this!
We then looked closely at artwork from the time to see how artists captured the events of the Great Fire. Inspired by what we had seen, the children created their own Great Fire of London collages. Using red, orange and yellow tissue paper, they created dramatic flames and added black buildings to represent the devastation caused by the fire.
It was a fantastic and creative way to begin our new topic, and the children are already full of enthusiasm and questions about what we will discover next!
