Today, the children had an exciting and inspiring workshop with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), a world-renowned architecture, engineering and design practice.
The children discovered how engineers and architects design buildings and structures that respond to the needs of people and the environment. They explored some of SOM’s incredible projects, including the Burj Khalifa and One World Trade Center, and learnt about the innovative ways engineers are shaping the future of construction.
The children also discovered how SOM is exploring the possibility of creating homes on the Moon for astronauts as part of the development of a future Moon village. They learnt about buildings that can help the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide, as well as how robots, virtual reality (VR) and new technologies are being used to help engineers design and construct buildings.
As part of the hands-on workshop, the children had the opportunity to recreate a model of One World Trade Center using a template, helping them to understand some of the planning and construction processes involved in creating such a complex structure.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to see how engineering, architecture, creativity and technology work together to solve real-world problems and shape the world of the future.
