This week, we were delighted to welcome our school nurse, Lise, who led an important session all about healthy relationships and friendships.
We began by exploring what makes a good friend, sharing ideas such as kindness, trust, respect and being there to help one another. We also discussed behaviours that might make a friendship unhealthy, including teasing, being unkind or making others feel uncomfortable.
Lise helped us understand that jealousy is a perfectly normal emotion, but what matters is how we recognise and manage these feelings, particularly within our friendships. We learnt that a healthy relationship is one that makes us feel happy and safe, where we are respected and valued for who we are.
We also explored the idea of peer pressure and how we might sometimes feel tempted to change our behaviour to ‘fit in’ with others. We discussed how this can lead us to make choices we wouldn’t usually make and why it is important to feel confident saying no when something doesn’t feel right.
By the end of our session, we could identify the important signs of a healthy relationship, including trust, respect and kindness. We were also able to name trusted people we could turn to if we ever needed help or advice.
A huge thank you to Lise for helping us reflect on how we treat others, how we deserve to be treated and the importance of surrounding ourselves with people who help us feel happy, safe and valued.
What kind of friend are you, and what little things could you do each day to help others feel happy, safe and included?
