Challenge Answers

In class we covered most of the pages from this chapter. However, please remember that we are now revisiting previous topics to revise what we have learnt. If you find you have completed these pages in your Maths No Problem book, go back through them and see if you can remember how to work out the answers. Check your work with the answers on the Maths No Problem pages. Then try the challenge questions.

Simplifying Fractions

Yesterday we looked at equivalent fractions. When we simplify a fraction, we are find the smallest equivalent fraction possible. For example, we can simplify 4/8 to 2/4 and then 1/2
So 4/8 simplified is 1/2

Let’s look at an example…

When we simplify a fraction, we need to divide the top (numerator) and the bottom (denominator) by the same number. We therefore have to use our times tables knowledge to help us to think of a common factor for both numbers in the fraction.

We can not simplify this fraction further because 5 (the numerator) can not be divided any smaller.

When we simplify a fraction, the whole number does not get simplified, only the fraction. So in this example, the 1 stays as it is.
To simplify 4/12 we need to think of the highest number that can divide into 4 (the numerator) and 12 (the denominator). 4 and 12 can be divided by 2, 3 and 4 but 4 is the highest number so we must choose that one.
4 divided by 4 is 1
12 divided by 4 is 3
So, the fraction becomes 1/3
Therefore, 1 4/12 simplified is 1 1/3
