This term, we’ll be learning all about the Anglo Saxons and Vikings!
We have already completed our introductory lessons on the Anglo-Saxons and as we know, the era was a fascinating time (but quite difficult to prove/evidence). As we looked at earlier this week, we have seen how the United Kingdom that we live in today has been influenced by the Anglo-Saxons and their kingdoms, as well as where they initially settled. We’ve learned all about the post-Roman migration of the Anglo-Saxons, the reasons they came and the impact they had on Britons who lived here at the time. We’ll continue to delve into the life of a typical Anglo Saxon, learn more about the kingdoms they created, Anglo Saxon kings such as Alfred the Great and the traces of Anglo Saxon Britain that are still here today.
In addition to this, we’ll be analysing the artefacts found in Sutton Hoo and begin to consider what these can tell us about life in Anglo-Saxon Britain.
A couple of hundred years after the Anglo Saxons migrated here, the Vikings arrived and we’ll be looking at their impact too!
Your homework includes curriculum work linked to this topic and this week. I’d like you to come up with three interesting facts you know about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings as well as three questions you have about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Write your 3 facts and 3 questions into the comments below and we can share our knowledge and questions in class – perhaps we can answer each other’s questions here in this blog!
I look forward to finding out what you come up with.
I am so excited to learn more about The Anglo Saxons and the Vikings! So here are my facts about theam and questions!
My three facts:
1. Did you know that the Anglo Saxons made the days of the weeks but they were spelt differently:
Monday-Monandæg
Tuesday-Tiwesdæg
Wednesday-Wodnesdæg
Thursday-Ðunresdæg
Friday-Fridedæg
Saturday-Sæternesdæg
Sunday-Sunandæg
2.So we already know that the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain but which ones?
Well, most people were farmers because people believed that since there was bad weather and flooding they couldn’t farm properly so farmers moved to Britain to make better crops and food to have a balanced diet.
3. Speaking about balanced diets, Anglo -Saxons had a very balanced diet. They ate meat from hunting animals and vegetables from farming. Unlike Henry VIII, he ate more meats than vegetables.
My three questions are:
When did the Vikings invade and how did the Saxons react?
Did the Vikings only use axes because in the video we watched it said that some guys with an axe came?
Did the Vikings sucsessfully invade the Anglo Saxons?
I am really excited to learn about the Anglo – Saxons and Vikings!
My three facts are:
1. Anglo – Saxon nuns could only wash their hair on Sundays, and they had to do it in public.
2. There were lots of saints from the Anglo – Saxon time. One of them was Saint Dunstan, a top saint in the late Saxon times. When an angel came to tell Saint Dunstan King Eadred was dying, the shock of seeing the angel actually killed his his horse!
3. The word ‘Viking’ comes from the Old Norse language, and it means a ‘pirate raid’.
My three questions are:
1. What happened when a Viking died?
2. What were Viking hairstyles like?
3. What illnesses did Vikings suffer from?
The Anglo – saxons didn’t like the stone building of the Romans so they found a land which had lots of natural resources like food and build their own homes.
The Anglo – Saxons had Christian tradition but they weren’t always Christians. When they first came over from Europe they were pagans they worship many Gods and asked them for food to eat and success in war.
I would like to know about the Anglo-Saxons war?
The Vikings were famous for sailing a huuuggggggeeeeee distance from their home land Scandinavia.
Why did they come in Britain?
I would like to know more about battles they had?
Facts:1
The Anglo Saxon came to Britain because where they use to live in was terrible weather which means that their crops were easily destroyed. But in Britain they were able to grow their crops and sell them to feed themselves properly.
Fact:2
They were part of the UK which meant that they were easily invested in war but in Britain it’s an island so they would see invaders arrive from the distance so they can plan and prepare themselves.
Fact:3
The Vicings were called in their language “pirat raids”but also Scots but then they came down to Britain with their axes to get revenge on the Anglo Saxon which took their victory of invading Britain.
Questions
1:Why were the Scots so terrible?
2:What did the British people think of the Anglo Saxon arrival?
3:Did the Vikings or Angelo Saxones suffered an illness
I am so excited to learn about the Anglo-Saxons!
As we have already learned, the vikings were the best in the whole seas
at that time and raided nearly every village that they met!

Being in the mead-hall, was so realistic!
Thank You Miss Forster Adams!
Did you know the vikings were not always called vikings? They were called northmen before vikings! They also never wore helmets with horns on them and learned how to swim and even play chess!
The Vikings came from Scandinavia and attacked, raided and gathered in several places . The first place they raided was Lindisfarne in AD 793. The Vikings had several gods who lived in a place called Asgard. There were gods including Freya, Odin, Thor and Loki. They had small houses with only 1 big room and they made materials or had slaves, which were called Thralls. Vikings often lived close to rivers as they had access to fertile soil and they could get loads of fish. Also the words Thorsdagr ,deyja and hreindyri became Thursday , die and reindeer.
The vikings first raid was on the island of Lindisfarne, an island with only a few settlers this was the start to viking raiding .Leif erikson was the first person to land on America not Christopher Colombus ! Over time Old Norse words such as deyia, hreindryi and thorsdagr became die, reindeer and Thursday in English.
