Good morning Year 6 and Happy Friday!!

Do you remember when we looked at Frida Kahlo a couple of weeks ago? I really enjoyed that topic and I loved the art that you created!

Anyway, when we looked at Frida Kahlo we also briefly looked at other famous artists who had done self portraits (Picasso, Warhol and Lowry).

Today, we’re going to learn about L.S Lowry-a famous artist in the 20th Century.

Carry out some research about Lowry and watch this video that offers more information about him.

Portrait of Ann-1927

As well as painting portraits, Lowry had a fondness for painting ‘modern life in an urban setting’. His picture above called ‘Coming out of school’.

What do you think about Lowry’s style? What do you like/don’t like?

Once you have conducted some research, have a go at recreating one of Lowry’s paintings and upload your picture to the website through ‘sharing posts and files’.

  1. I think Lowry makes things look quite modern and the colours aren’t very bright but they blend in whereas in the portrait, he painted the woman with brighter colours and we can easily see it. He also often makes the sky look cloudy. I like how he can fit the whole community into one scene and how everyone is getting along as friends inside. I don’t like how he made the sky look cloudy and dull because everyone was outside like it was a nice day.

  2. Good morning.

I find Lowry’s art very interesting. While looking online a bit, when you see his paintings you can imagine them moving. I like it very much because it’s just simple strokes of the brush and simple colours, but with a realistic flow.

When I’ll be doing a picture, I think I’ll find it easier than other art style copies, because techniques of other artists, I find, not so simple.

  3. I also like how he uses the same colours through out the whole pictures, it adds a nice theme to it, a great colour theme. They show the essence of the pictures (if you know what I mean). You can tell where it is because of the colours.

Also, the colours he’s used for the sky fit in perfectly with the dark, grey, polluted shade. He does this with lots of his pictures, as if all of his paintings would come together.

  4. I think Lowry likes to focus and create more of an atmosphere and try to not only paint a picture on a canvas but paint a picture in your mind about the feeling of this portrait.I don’t really like how he made everything look so gloomy as he could easily made the people not look so alone or depressed. With the woman’s portrait I think he focuses really on the face mor than the background, I like how he made the lady look real but not too real like some other portraits. I like this painting more because of how balanced the surrealism is comparing to other artists.

  5. I think that Lowry makes his portraits very strait and uses several different colours. as well as Frida khalo she uses alot of colours and her portraits are very busy. Lowry’s portraits are unique because part of the world artists use busy backgrounds! ??????

  6. I think that Lowry makes things look straight, organised and modern. Although he doesn’t do bright backgrounds or very intense colours like Frida Kahlo but he does do lots of intricute people and the sky shade in some paintings . When I was searching for Lowry his paintings had simple strokes and had some portraits with straight lines like Picasso would do.

  7. Good morning Miss Gorick and Mrs Healy,
I find Lowry’s paintings unique because usually other artists draw people very detailed but, Lowry’s people are just a few paint brush stokes and they are drawn. I also found that Lowry was very smart because he knew that over the years his painting would get dirty and his once white background would be a creamy colour showing the polluted air that the people were living in. I like Lowry’s art because it is very simple.

  8. I find Lowry’s style modern because of the environment with the factories with puffs of black smoke coming out. The dark colours blend with the gloomy atmosphere. The building’s appearance is so fascinating as the bricks stand out and it looks as if it hasn’t been painted. What I find so great is how the children are packed together in groups playing and talking to each other. It reminds me of when I come out of school.
I like Lowry’s style as it shows how life is and is so unique compared to other artists. I like that he chose everyday’s life places instead of painting a famous landmark for instance. Also, I like the brush techniques as the smoke hangs in the air and the white background is thick with a mixture of black.

I agree, it’s interesting how he picks to paint everyday places instead of famous landmarks. Thanks Anahi 🙂

  10. I find Lowry’s artwork quite interesting since the usual main focus of his art is people walking by big houses. This is interesting to me because he makes the people almost the same and there are very grey and dark, sort of gloomy colours. He paints people with straight strokes and he refers to them as “matchstick men”; a quite relevant name. He painted mysterious unpopulated landscapes which I think he did so to express the clouded thoughts a depressed man would have. L.S.Lowry is very different to other artists since most artists try to create a happy or more colourful atmosphere.

  11. Miss Gorick says:

I agree, his interpretation of people is very interesting. Thanks Laetitia 🙂

  12. I think that L.S Lowry makes his paintings very clear. In terms of that he didn’t use shaded lines to make the painting blend, he uses clear lines so they stand out from the painting.
Here are some facts about about him:
Did you know? During the Blitz, Lowry volunteered for two or three nights a week as a fire watcher on the roof of Manchester department stores such as Debenhams and Lewis’s. He died of pneumonia.

  13. Miss Gorick says:

I didn’t know that he volunteered during the Blitz, how interesting!

    Laurence Stephen Lowry
He was an English artist known for painting scenes with working class people (he got a knighthood for it!). Lowry born on 1st of November 1887 Stretford, Lancashire, England and died on the 23rd of February 1976 (aged 88) Glossop, Derbyshire, England.
Lowry is a perfect example of an artist who like Picasso was an accomplished life drawer but was able to turn his skills to develop unique stylised paintings.

  15. Miss Gorick says:

Wow I didn’t realise that he had received a knighthood!

    Good day everyone!!!???

I think Lowry likes painting ? towns, big cities and, like you said, modern life.I can tell he likes do paint these themes as in most of his artworks has factories and ?schools, and a very busy neighbourhood.I think ? there is no shadows because there is no sun,and as there is no sun,no one is happy and lots of people feel warm and happy ? and welcomed when they think about or are in the sun ?.therefore the people in Lowrys picture are very sad ☹️ and depressed, very similar to the backgrounds theme i think ?

Hi Miss Gorick, what are you doing today?

  18. Miss Gorick says:

Hi Paloma, I have had a busy day today doing lots of work. I think I will follow your example and go for a run later so I can get some fresh air!

  19. Miss Gorick says:

Hi Year 6, thank you for your comments. I agree that his choice of colours are quite dull and dark. I suppose he’s trying to reflect the colours of urban living. I will have a look at some of his other paintings!

  20. ?Timothy? says:

I think L.S Lowry captures modern life well. Such as in the ‘coming out of school’ . He knows that it is very busy as that’s when most want to run home and rest or like in his painting ‘going to the match’. He uses his knowledge about the object , landscape or person he was painting and incorporated that into his paintings.

  21. Hello everyone!!!
I am currently making a portrait of Lowry himself.I have chosen ‘THE MAN WITH RED EYES’. 🙂

I will post it in the files tomorrow when it is completed!
    Thankyou! 🙂

  22. I have nearly finished re-creating one of his artworks. Mine is a recreation of ‘the Piper’, I can’t wait to see it finished.

  23. I didn’t mean ‘piper’, I accidentally typed it for some reason, it was just a painting I saw.

    I’m doing ‘Stow-on-the-wold’.

Good morning Miss, I have research about L.S Lowry. He became an artist after he missed a train. He was walking down a street with big dull buildings, when he had a sudden want to paint them. That was when he decided to become an artist.
He started painting with pencil, and then moved on to paint. He set up his paintings by firstly adding white paint onto a canvas, then he would remember what he saw and make an image of his painting in his mind. Then he would lightly sketch it with pencil onto the dry paint, and then he would paint it. He used only five colours, they were: red, white, blue, yellow and black.
At first I didn’t like the paintings because they were really colourless and dark, but now after having seen them for a while, I started to enjoy the paintings, because of the way how Lowry designed and created his paintings, by making the buildings seem way bigger than how tall the people are.

  25. I have done my drawing by Lowry called the man with red eyes! I posted it and I’m very excited to see what everyone else looks like!!??
