Good Morning Year 2!

Click here for a printable version of this blog post: Thursday Computing printable

Today we are going to learn how to make a branch that helps us to find out about an animal. We’ll do this by sorting the animals into different groups.

Before we make our own, I’d like you to have a look at this final version about minibeasts.  Click on play at the bottom and then you can try. Choose a minibeast from the left hand side and then answer questions about it on the branching diagram, click on the thumbs up or down to answer. Eventually, it should tell you the minibeast that you were thinking of!

The secret to making these is thinking of YES or NO questions, these are questions that you can only answer yes or no to.

*If you want to play a game with your family, play 20 questions! Someone thinks of something, anything! And the rest of the family can ask 20 yes/no questions to try and work out what it is. You’ll soon work out which questions are helpful and which are not..!

Let’s make our own!

  1. Go to J2e.com, log in using your USO details, and then click on J2data
  2. Once you’re in there, click on Branch
  3. Choose a blank template
  4. Choose your topic from the options on the left hand side. I’m going to choose Animals.
  5. Choose between 3 and 6 examples from your category, and place them in the main box on the screen by clicking on them.
  6. Click sort (bottom right)
  7. You now have to come up with a yes/no question and then sort all your animals into yes or no (for example, can it fly?)
  8. When you have sorted them all, click ok.
  9. It will then keep asking you to come up with yes/no questions and sorting the animals until they have all the questions they need.
  10. Once you’ve done enough questions, it’ll show you your finished branch! Make sure you click the save button!
  11. Get your family to test it out for you!

*Once you have done one, you can do another and play around with the backgrounds and number of things you have in your graph.

Once you have clicked on save, please let me know in the comments, because I can then go and find it in J2e and put a photo of it on our blog for everyone to see! You can also let us know which categories you have chosen and how you found it, as well as asking any questions. Have fun!

If you want any extra help, then have a look here for a video that goes through the steps of how to make your own.

  1. We did two branches, saved on J2e. One used six animals; the other used thirteen minibeasts. We tried them out and they seemed to work quite well.
