Writing has cohesion [consistency] if it is clear how the different parts fit together.
Cohesion devices are words used to show how the different parts of a text fit together – they create cohesion.

Cohesion devices include: determiners and pronouns which can refer us back to earlier words, conjunctions and adverbs which can make relationships between words.

We group sentences together in paragraphs.

Can you write a paragraph building cohesion by using words like ‘then’, ‘after that’, ‘this’ and ‘firstly’? How about using adverbs or pronouns?

Please proof-read your response before submitting (check punctuation, spelling and grammar).

We look forward to reading your responses,

Mrs Avdiu & Ms Robertson

Good morning Yr 5! Happy Tuesday ?
Firstly I must say what a good job everyone is doing with their home learning tasks and writing regularly on the school blog. Every morning I get up and go in to the kitchen and make myself a lovely cup of fresh frothy coffee. I then get ready for Joe’s work-out, after that- I sit down in-front of my computer and read all of your wonderful work.
    Have a lovey day!

  2. Mrs Avdiu says:

    Sounds like a fab routine!

  3. When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is go to eat breakfast. I then go to post blogs on the school website and read for about one hour. When I go up stairs, I usually do a whole writing task for 40mins[once or twice a week]. once I have finished, I have a TV break for 15mins and once that’s finished, I go to do maths no problem for half an hour. I then have my lunch and play for one hour. After lunch, I get one hour of completing un
finished work or do extra work. After that, I don’t have to do work!

  4. Mrs Avdiu says:

    Sounds like a great routine!

  5. Today was the day I was going to Florida to see my grandma . I was so excited it was the afternoon when I had to go so me and my dad jumped in a taxi and drove to the airport . When we got there we had to do a bag check . It took a very long time but eventually we got on the plane . It took eight hours for us to get there , but finally we got there . It was two in the morning so I had to go straight to bed .

Hello Mrs Avdiu and Mrs Robertson I hope you enjoy .

  6. Mrs Avdiu says:

I did enjoy reading that, thank you!

  7. Good morning Mrs Avdiu and Ms Robertson! I hope you’re having a great Tuesday so far. This is what I came up with:

The first lesson I start with is spellings, sentences and CGP SPaG. After that I move onto the CGP maths and the Maths No Problem pages. Then I get onto the blog to answer to the work Mrs Avdiu and Ms Robertson gives us. After that I have my lunch break and take a break. Once i have had my lunch I do some of my writing task.

  8. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thank you Elsa. I hope your Tuesday has been great too.
I liked your sentences. I hope you have some time in the day to play! 🙂

  9. Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a lovely day so far!
For today’s task I came up with this paragraph – have a look.

Every morning from Monday to Friday, I wake up and do my bed. After that, I get dressed and I get ready to start Joe’s workout with my mum. When I finish that, I make my breakfast. I play piano after eating, (I do wash my hands!?) and then I start my home learning. I do my writing tasks first, then I do maths, after that I read and do art. I have lunch at 12:50pm. Then I have other activities like Mathletics and some other worksheets. I have my computing times within the day so I write on school blogs every now and then. When the school day finishes, I have my screen time – that is when I can call and chat with my friends. I have dinner and I then I play card games, I bake and I watch movies.
Finally, I get ready for bed?

I usually have even more things to try squishing into the day…
I guess I now how it is for teachers ?

    Have a nice day ??

  10. Mrs Avdiu says:

Wow sounds like a very structured day. I might have to incorporate some of those things to my day – I especially like that you make time for your friends 🙂

  11. Firstly I wake up then get dressed and eat breakfast. After that I start doing my learning tasks and I have also been doing P.E with Joe Wicks online. After these tasks, I have a healthy snack and a drink, then do one of my writing tasks in my yellow folder.
Not long after this, I have lunch. Today’s lunch was a cheese and ham sandwich, which to me this is yummy.
After lunch I complete three ‘maths no problem’ sheets.

  12. Mrs Avdiu says:

Excellent. Hope you have some time for reading and playing!

  13. Hello, I hope everyone is well!

The curious girl walked through the streets of the town. She suddenly stopped when she spotted a hole in the wall surrounding the hospital which, had long ago been abandoned. Turning her head she made sure the coast was clear and crept inside the gap and into the hole. After checking the girl cut back the ivy blocking her way and then something very mysterious appeared… aliens! She screamed and wanted to run away. However, she was glued to the spot with fear and her legs would not move.

  14. Mrs Avdiu says:

A very cohesive paragraph. Thank you for sharing Ayako!

  15. The sooty black cat rose from his resting place as he heard the unnerving sound of the roaring wind . Then with his long back hunched, he descended the stairs . After going through the cat flap , Lillo ‘s thick black hair stood on end . There was something lurking in the shadows . So he swiftly dodged past the heavy metal bins as he observed the setting . Nothing . After all it was his own imagination .

  16. Mrs Avdiu says:

Great descriptive words. I think there is a word missing after ‘hunched’? Can’t believe it was only his imagination, I was convinced there was something terrifying lurking in the shadows!

  17. Violette says:

Good morning Miss Avdiu & Miss Robertson ,

Firstly, in the morning, I go downstairs. After that, I say hello to my parents and then I eat my delicious breakfast. I then post some works on the blog for a good half hour. I can also follow a french lesson on TV. Following this, I do the math, problem and mathletics. I eat lunch and enjoy a brake. I use this time to build a “happyness cartoon house” ,or play a game with my mum. (After brake some time I do comprehension and CGP ). After this busy day, I can watch the info on TV and play a game with my brother and of course I take care of my dog!

  18. Hello everyone,

Firstly, I wake up and go downstairs. Then, I eat my delicious breakfast with my parents.
After this, I do my homework as if I am at school. I look at blogs and answer the questions. My mum prepare me a daily work with some maths, comprehension, reading and mathletics tasks. So, I try to do my best! After doing all my homework, I can have a break and play outside. I even build a “happyness house” with boxes. Then, I play games, call some friends and of course take care of my dog!
After all these the day is almost finish and it is time to tale shower!

  19. Ms Robertson says:

Hi Yr 5! Happy Wednesday ?
I really enjoyed reading all of your cohesive paragraphs – I have learnt a lot about your daily routines and this has shown me how hard you are all working, I’m very impressed! ?

  20. Firstly, Tina jumped onto the dusty ledge which was very, very high above the old ,deserted city. She had a long sooty black tail that bent ,like a bolt of lightning to and fro. The sky was like a blanket of darkness filled with shimmering stars frowning at this polluted and disgusting city. Then her legs moved slowly then… SNAP, she was dangling from the other ledge above, millimetres from falling into her doom… After that she realised what to do and used all her cat -like senses and muscles to pull herself up above the town…

  21. Hello Mrs Avdiu and Miss Robertson!

Firstly, Skip woke up from her long sleep then went straight outside to play! After she was away from her owner’s sight, She started to cause all of the trouble… As the beautiful cat strolled around the huge garden, a microscopic robin landed in a tiny tree. This was Skip’s moment to pounce and catch the cute robin. When the robin made a tiny movement, as quick as a flash, Skip swiftly sprinted towards the robin and up the tree. Then, she caught the bird just in time before it escaped…
    Kayla.
