‘Earlier today’ is the adverbial.

“Earlier today, I discovered fronted adverbials.”

A fronted adverbial is when the adverbial word or phrase is moved to the front of the sentence, before the verb. So here, ‘earlier today’ is a fronted adverbial.

  3. Hello everyone, I hope that you are well! I have written down the grammar challenge in my yellow workbook
Here is my paragraph ( including all of the above) :

Light streamed in as the beautiful mahogany clock chimed one, I was almost ready. Tears filled my eyes as I assembled the last few bits and pieces. It was time. I had to leave. It wasn’t my choice.
Although I dreaded to leave school and friends I knew that I could not persuade my parents to stay. It was for work they said we have to go, only for a while, they said. I did not believe them.
A part of me, a small, adventurous part of me, was exited to go to a foreign land, England ( at least I think that is what it is called).

Late in the afternoon, we emerged from the plane and I saw for the first time what ‘England’ was like and I cannot lie, it did not look attractive.

    CHALLENGE ???

Sophie looked out of her badly painted window. The black sky was as someone had put a dark blanket over the whole city. Even though it was bitter cold, Sophie decided to go outside for a walk. She put on her orange glasses (the ones her mum wore 20 years ago) and slowly tiptoed down the spiral stairs. As Sophie was putting her very bright green coat on, she heard a whispering downstairs in the kitchen. ‘It’s just granny, it’s fine…’ she told herself, but before she could continue she was rudely interrupted by some laughing. Her heart was thumping madly inside her chest… At that very moment you could have noticed that it looked as though it was going to pop-out…

‘Granny?’ she asked, her whole body shacking.
    There was no respond…
‘Granny?’ she repeated, ‘Are you there?’
    A funny respond followed.
    ‘No, I am not.’
    ‘What!?! You just, but…’
    ‘GO AWAY NOW BEFORE I…‘
Sophie gasped. ‘What will you do?’
Sophie stepped inside the kitchen, it was not her granny’s eyes that she met, but Benjamin’s.
‘YOU!’ she screamed, ‘YOU! WHY ARE YOU HERE!? ARE YOU GOING TO MURDER ME LIKE YOU DID TO MY MUM AND MY GRANDAD? ARE YOU? YOU BRAT! HOW DID YOU EVEN GET IN HERE?! HUH? HOW?!!?’

Sophie was not afraid now, she was more furious.

Benjamin just laughed and stepped closer to her.
To Sophie’s horror, she saw her granny behind him. ‘NOOO! NOT HER! PLEASE! NOT HER!’ she screamed.
Benjamin repeated his stupid laugh. ‘Sophie, don’t you worry about her.’ he said.

‘Yeah don’t….’ Her granny’s eyes were turning blood red.
‘What!?!? WHY? YOU ARE GOING TO DIE NOW AND…’ again, she was interrupted..
‘No Sophie, I won’t die you see – because I am a Hingo..’
‘A HINGO! SO YOU MURDER PEOPLE! WHAT?! SO IT WAS YOU WHO MURDERED GRANDAD AND MY MUM!?! WHAT KIND OF PERSON DOES THAT? AND WHY?’
‘Sophie, I had to, anyways I have a better life with Benjamin, we go around streets and have a bit of fun with people..’
‘What do you mean? How is killing people fun? Like how… NOOOOOOOOOO!!!’
And again she was interrupted but this time, she could not talk or fight back..
She just lay there, on her back, in her dirty pyjamas….

‘Nice work…’ said Benjamin to Sophie’s granny.
With that they both left the house chuckling to each other…

    ~ Nika ???

P.S. Please, tell me if you enjoyed reading this, also tell me if you found it scary…

  11. Mrs Avdiu says:

Wow! I am so impressed with your short story. I really like the way you used speech to create suspense. I have to say I did find it scary, especially with words like ‘gasped’ and ‘screamed’ – you are really getting better and better at writing to have an effect on the reader 🙂

On a crisp autumn evening, Amilia (an ordinary girl) was having a beautiful, agreable walk in a park with her two brothers, Fred and Frank, and her best friend Catherine. Whilst her brothers moaned, Amilia showed Catherine her herbarium she had created with diverse, colourful leaves. Suddenly, Frank told the girls to stop. He had a weird sensation they were being watched. Catherine (who alarmed herself for nothing) started to panick and to twiddle her thumbs. Out of nowhere, a man ran to Amilia and knocked her to the ground. He took Catherine and fled to the nearest exit. As quick as a flash, Amilia got to her feet, dashed after him and sprinted like never before. The man flung Catherine in a car (whose seats were all dirty) and went to the driver’s place. Dear diary,
Yesterday, was like any other day. Firstly, I woke up early in the morning so I could get some breakfast and get changed. After all of that was done, it was time to do coach Joe’s workout (which I really enjoyed , even though it left me exhausted and breathless). My brother and I do this every weekday. Before getting on with school work, I had a drink and prepared my desk ready to do some challenging maths and creative English. As soon as I finished the daily tasks, it was lunchtime. After my break, I read my new book. In the afternoon I got a bit bored and restless so I caught up with some of my friends. Since it was really windy yesterday, I didn’t do my daily walk. However, I went to the allotment instead. Bye for now.

Have the loveliest of lovely days ever!

It had been gloomy all day and Pippin was feeling miserable. So when he heard a sharp knock on the door, he got up without hesitation, and went to see who it was. To his surprise, not a man but a creature that looked like one, only shorter (who Pippin thought was a dwarf -he couldn’t be sure) was standing on his front porch holding a staff. He was wearing robes of the deepest emerald and around his neck was a wrought gold amulet encrusted with sapphires. Warmly, Pippin invited him inside and they sat down. “Would you like to have an adventure my boy?” asked the dwarf, “I can take you to great places, you know.” Almost immediately, Pippin replied yes and they agreed to set out for Eartherack that Monday. Without another word, the dwarf left and Pippin began to ponder the thought of adventure. He was going on an adventure, a real adventure.

P.S. For the grammar task today, is the answer for the last question: brackets or is it a full stop, because there are both.
