Good morning Year 5,

Please note I will be in the St Vincent’s building today so please understand responses to comments may take longer than usual. I will not be able to approve comments as quickly as I usually do either so don’t worry if you don’t see them show up! I will get to them as soon as I can.

Your English focus for today is: Grammar

Please complete the following activity in your yellow home learning book. You do not need to write the answers to these again in the comments.

Please revisit the following to help with your task:

How to use inverted commas

What are modal verbs?

How to use brackets

How to use a semi-colon

How to use commas in sentences

A semi-colon can be used instead of a full stop between two related sentences. This links them together in a way a full stop doesn’t.

Task: Can you write some super sentences with semi-colons in your Home Learning book?

In the blog comments, perhaps you can tell us about your weekend by including all of the punctuation above?

Remember to check out the videos if you need support or ask for help in the comments!

  27. ∾Renee∾ says:

Hello everyone. Here are the things I done on the weekend. ?

On the weekend, I went to the forest which is about 5 minutes away from my house and I went cycling? because there was more space than in our garden. I learned how to cycle 1 week ago but now I can’t stop riding it anymore because I enjoy it so much?. As it was sunny on Sunday, my dad decided to make some delicious burgers ? to eat for lunch then he made mango sorbet? which really refreshed me. Last Saturday, it was quite cold, so my family decided to watch some movies and my mum made some popcorn ?, so it was like we were in a cinema. To me, cycling was my favourite part of the weekend. ?

I hope you enjoyed reading what I done on the weekend. Have a lovely rest of the day. ?

  28. Mrs Avdiu says:

Wow! You learned how to cycle! I’m so proud of you! Thank you for sharing such a fantastic paragraph and making a big effort to include the grammar rules.

  29. Hi everyone,
    My sentences with semicolons are:
I quickly ran through the long grass; it was full of naughty, annoying bugs.
I gazed at lovely tulips and ravishing roses; they are full of beautiful colours that are blinding in the sunlight.
The funny bunny dashed through the gloomy hole; the fox followed it.

    And my weekend:
During the weekend I saw some cute bunnies in a field (and a horse) that made me jump for joy. I gazed happily trying to get closer; there was a fence blocking the way, so I couldn’t get any closer. There were some baby ducklings on the other pavement. I should have gone there, but we had to carry on walking. I shouted, “I want to go and see them!” But Mummy and Daddy said no.

  30. Mrs Avdiu says:

Sara, I am so impressed with your use of a semi colon and even more impressed that you had such an amazing weekend. Bunnies and horses, wow!

  31. Mrs Avdiu says:

Thanks Marco. These weekend or this weekend? Please check spelling. Also please check the information in the brackets as it reads as a very long sentence. PS: I still care!

Thank you Elsa. It’s great that you are keeping in touch with friends online. Please check spellings (eg: chose) and you’ve missed out a few words but proofreading will help with this 🙂

  33. Good morning everyone, here’s what happened on my weekend.

On Saturday morning, I baked baklava (a Greek/Middle Eastern sweet pastry). After that, I cooked some kofta (also a Greek/Middle Eastern food) and went on a bike ride. The next day (Sunday), I went to Grosvenor Square for lunch; it was really fun and I might go back there. Later that day, I watched Harry Potter 3 (Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban), the best part of the day.

I really enjoyed the weekend and I hope you have a good day.
