Good morning, Year 5!

Well done with your grammar work yesterday. You will be able to apply these skills tomorrow in your big writing task.

Today’s English focus is: Spelling & Handwriting

Please practise these spellings in your yellow homework book as well as find the definitions (click image to enlarge):

This website helps to learn how to spell these words and has some games you can practise. If you find a great game that you think your classmates would like, please share it in the comments!

If you can, ask your sibling or parent to test you on the above words.
If you want some more ideas of how to practise your spellings you could:

Use the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method to
learn your spellings.

When you are writing these words in your home learning book, try to use neat, joined handwriting. Most of us have been typing on the blog but it is important to make sure we practise our handwriting too!
Can you write a paragraph using more than two of these words? Let’s see who can include the most spelling words in their paragraph! Please type your paragraph into the comment section below.

Plan your sentence first in your Home Learning Book to ensure that it makes sense before publishing it on the blog! If you are looking for a challenge, you could visit the Shakespeare Project.

Miss Coleman & Miss Carruthers will kindly respond to the blogs for today.

Good luck with learning your spellings!

  1. Ms Robertson says:

    Morning Yr 5!
Good luck with learning this weeks spellings – can’t wait to read your paragraphs.
    Have a lovely day! ?

  2. My profession as an actor requires me to practise my pronunciation and to recognise rhyme and rhythm in speech.

I recommend that when going to a restaurant, in order to comply with the current advice, you must queue two metres apart before entering. When you have finished your meal, you should return home to watch your favourite programme on television.

  3. Miss Coleman says:

Excellent work Theo-I’m impressed by how many of the spelling words you have managed to incorporate-and your advice is very relevant.

  4. Hi Everyone,
James’ profession was being an actor and his favourite program that he did was called ‘THE LOST BOY’. The next day, he was standing in the queue to audition another film. This film is better than ‘THE LOST BOY’ so he needed to do his best. Legs trembling, James walked onto the stage and read his lines out clearly. The director gave him a different part because he thought that James was really good. Excitedly, he took the sheet and his new part was restaurant manager and the director recommended him to be bossy. He was really good at remembering lines so he barely needed the sheet. Suddenly, he managed to recognize one of his biggest actor enemies. James was really keen to see the results but there was a problem, he got the part with his enemy…

The words I used were: 6
    profession
    program
    queue
    restaurant
    recognize
    recommended

  5. Miss Coleman says:

What an imaginative paragraph Marco-well done!
T- can you improve the opening sentence with an alternative to, ‘that he did’?
T-Take care to keep to the past tense

  6. Hello everyone,
I hope that you are all well and have had a nice day so far!
Here is my paragraph, I really hope that you enjoy it:

Brushing past all obstacles, Rebecca swiftly made her way to the restaurant which her friend Paul had highly recommended. There she would meet her brother, whose profession is a lawyer, and have him answer a few questions in order to try and win her case.
When she finally arrived, she found herself to be at the end of a very long queue and Rebecca could not even see the entrance to the restaurant. She stood there in the cold, teeth chattering for at least half an hour until eventually she was welcomed inside.
Rebecca greeted the hostess with relief, thinking that if she had been in that glacial weather for any longer she would have frozen to death.
Almost as if reading her mind, the lady, who had revealed that her name was Sophia, guided Rebecca to a warm comfy area where the fire soon warmed her up from head to toe. Sophia had a strange pronunciation and unusual rhythm to her voice when she spoke and Rebecca couldn’t recognise where she was from, but that wasn’t relevant as she was very friendly and welcoming.
Soon after, Rebecca found that the restaurant was definetley worth the wait and she had a pleasant time despite the fact that she was talking about how her experiance in the courtroom would go.

  7. Miss Coleman says:

Hello Lavinia-what a great paragraph. I like the description you have used, particularly the contrast of the cold outdoors to the warmer interior.
T-Try using a dictionary to check the spelling of other words you may be unsure about. Please check: definetley & experiance

  8. Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a great day so far! For today’s English task, I wrote a paragraph with all the words in it! I hope that you will like it!
    Have a look:

    ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
    PARAGRAPH!

Molly and Fred, the two worst bullies, went to the finest restaurant in town together. Though, when they arrived there, they had to queue outside. The man in front of them started singing a rhyme with a very bad rhythm. This, my friends, is very relevant for this story. ‘Is it really appropriate for him to do that? I mean, his pronunciation is utterly ridiculous.’ whispered Molly rudely to Fred. ‘Yeah, I know, honestly…’ Fred gave a pause and then said to the man ‘I recommend that you should do that somewhere else. You should make your own programme and then just sing what you want to!’ Molly chuckled to herself but hid it with a cough… Fred carried on without noticing. ‘People will recognise you all over the world. Your profession is to sing you know, but not here, OK?’ The man gave a little pause and then said ‘I guess you are right! Thank you! I will do that! Actually, why don’t you just go inside before me, please do. Thank you! Bye!!!!’ With that, the man strolled off singing his song. ‘Good work Fred! Thanks. Good job, let’s eat, I’m starving…’ said Molly. ‘Stupid man, ha! Wait until Mrs Evans hears about this, she will go nuts! Ha! Can’t wait…’

I hope that you liked my story! Have a great day everyone!
Stay safe, and remember, don’t be like Molly and Fred!

    ~ Nika ???

Hello Lavinia-what a great paragraph. I like the description you have used, particularly the contrast of the cold outdoors to the warmer interior.
T-Try using a dictionary to check the spelling of other words you may be unsure about. Please check: definetley & experiance

  10. Miss Coleman says:

Hello Nika, a great paragraph-well done. I agree that we shouldn’t be rude like Molly and Fred-but Molly is also the name of my puppy and she is adorable!

  11. Good morning!?
    Here’s my paragraph for today:

As an English teacher, my profession is to teach English. The class I’m currently working with is class 5. Although our topic is rhyme and rhythm, it is relevant to work on their pronunciation. On the weekends I normally do my weekly grocery shop, however, a child from my class recognises me while I join the long queue. Once they recommend a really fancy restaurant to me, it’s been such a long week, sometimes it is just nice to watch your favourite TV programme and relax.

(? I ended up using all the words)
Have a good rest of the day!

  12. Miss Coleman says:

    Good morning Ava,
Well done for using all the words. I hope you do become a teacher one day-it is a great profession!

  13. Violette says:

    Hello everyone,
I hope you are having a great day!!
    This is my paragraph:

Amicie’s profession was to become a singer. The rhythm of her music’s will be calm and relax-full. She is hopping to sing in a British restaurant. Excited, the girl is already imagining the queue waiting to go in the restaurant to listen to her! The restaurant accepted, but will give her a specific program of times when she can sing and when she can have a break!!

  14. Miss Coleman says:

    Hello Violette,
Thank you for your imaginative paragraph using many of the spelling words.
T-Check if there is a more appropriate suffix to add to relax (relax-full isn’t a word).
T-Check spelling. Hopping means jumping on one leg and I don’t think that is what you meant!

  15. Sebastiao says:

    Hi everyone,
My profession is the national queue secretary. I observe the queues outside restaurants and I recommend short queues as people get restless. I still recognise that some restaurants have a very high reputation and receive lots of recommendations so I don’t mind long queues. I also organise the programmes for the annual Food Festival.
    Have a good day! ?

  16. Miss Coleman says:

    Hi Seb,
With all the queues everywhere at the moment that could become a real job! Good paragraph-well done.
It was lovely to see you on Monday when you collected your MNP books.

  17. Hi everyone I hope you like my paragraph.

My profession is a head chef at a restaurant. A It’s highly recommended eatery, but my waiters are quite dumb and spoil it for me. They throw their spoons everywhere and it’s definitely not relevant. Although, the band have very good rhythm and their songs rhyme. It takes ages to get out of that place because the queue is so long outside. I get home and on my doorstep is a struggling actor patiently practicing his pronunciation, I recognise him. He was my old drama teacher, Mr Blake!
    ~Iggy

  18. Miss Coleman says:

    Hi Iggy,
An imaginative paragraph-well done. I’m looking forward to when we can go to restaurants again!

  19. Hi everyone,
I did the spelling and handwriting work in my yellow book and here is my paragraph:

I always recommend the restaurant on Baker Street with the big queue. I recognise it from a TV programme which was explaining how hard a profession it is to be as a chef.

The girls pronunciation in her rhyme was incorrect. However, the rhythm was perfect. The title of her poem was ‘Climate Change’ and this is relevant to our world today.

    See you all soon!

  20. Miss Coleman says:

    Hi Regan,
Thank you for your sentences. Next time see if you can link all the words into one long paragraph on the same subject.

Also, if you prefer to write in your book rather then type you can send me a photograph of your work?

It was lovely to see you on Monday when you collected your MNP books.

  21. Hello Ms Colman! I saw your puppy in one of the school messages – it looks so adorable!! I hope that one day when we get back to school you can take it there to- just for day though….

    Have a great day everyone!

    ~ Nika ???

  22. Miss Coleman says:

I think she would love that Nika. She comes to the Hub with me and really enjoys playing with the children here.

  23. Dear Miss Coleman and Miss Caruthers, here is my paragraph with all the words:

Gabrila, my mum’s friend, has a very bad pronunciation. She wanted to become a teacher but her friends didn’t think she was made for that sort of profession. She gave in and made herself waitress at a nearby restaurant. The chef, called Reuben MacKay, showed up on many television programmes and made people want to come at “the Fisherman’s boat”. Soon, huge crowds of people queued up to taste their fish and chips and the restaurant was recommended in every family. ” The Fisherman’s boat” was recognised as the best restaurant in town. Gabrila, who was always a very poetic girl, made its menus whose ends rhymed and that maintained a very good rhythm. To be relevant to this story, I will tell you that fish and chips is now my favorite meal!

  24. Miss Coleman says:

    Dear Jeanne,
Well done for using all the words in your paragraph.
T-Take care with articles such as a & and. This link will help you:
    https://www.grammarly.com/blog/articles/

I have not eaten fish and chips since I went to the seaside for a day last summer. Yum!

  25. Gabriella says:

I found this beautifully written rhyme.

I think that I recognise that man from
    somewhere.

    profession:
A paid occupation, especially one that
involves prolonged training and a formal
    qualification.

    recommend:
put forward (someone or something) with
approval as being suitable for a particular
    purpose or role.

  26. Miss Coleman says:

Thank you for the sentences and definitions Gabriella,
Can you challenge yourself and see if you can use all the words in a paragraph about the same theme?
It was lovely to see you on Monday when you collected your MNP books.

  27. Good morning everyone. I hope you are well. This is my paragraph:

The handsome man replied to the woman’s question “I highly recommend that restaurant across the road. The food is delicious, although you have to queue for a table.” She responded,
“What did you say is the name of the restaurant? I remember it rhymes with relevant” asked the pretty lady with blonde hair and blue eyes.
“Elephant, you can recognise the sign from anywhere,” answered the man. The hungry lady thanked him, said goodbye and walked in the direction of the restaurant.

  28. Miss Coleman says:

    Great paragraph Ayako-well done!
T-Remember that you only need to state who is speaking once. Can you check the sentence below please?
    She responded,
“What did you say is the name of the restaurant? I remember it rhymes with relevant” asked the pretty lady with blonde hair and blue eyes.

  29. Miss Coleman says:

    Dear Jeanne,
Well done for using all the words in your paragraph.

  30. Hello everyone, here is my paragraph.

Knock! Knock! “Who is it?” called Meg from inside the house.
“Me, I’m home,” replied Mr Alsworth in his deep bear-like voice as he pushed the door open and sat down for supper. Soon after, the rest of the family joined and started talking about the events of the day. “I visited this new restaurant,” said Mrs Alsworth, “they had a very long queue though I would still recommend it.” Mr Alsworth didn’t speak for most of the meal but Denis, his 18 year old son, didn’t need to be a genius to recognise the disturbed look on his father’s face. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Nothing. It’s not relevant, but if you really want to know I’ll tell you,” responded Mr Alsworth.
“Well I would like to know.”
“Ok here goes – you know that I have always been happy that I chose the profession of a doctor.”
    “Yes.”
“Well, the government just banned me from it”
    “That sounds terrible.“
    “It is.”
“I know what we’ll do. Tomorrow we’ll go to the restaurant that mum recommended and play the rhyme game there.”
    “That sounds great!”

  31. Miss Coleman says:

    Hello Zavan,
Another great paragraph , well done!
T-you have used direct speech really well but try to break up the speaking with some detail about the people and their environment so it doesn’t become more of a play script.

  32. Hi everyone hope your having a fantastic day. I hope you enjoy reading my paragraph.

My friends in Brighton recognised me and my family while we were heading to Brighton beach. They caught us up and recommended a five star restaurant to go to after the beach. After the beach we headed over to the recommended restaurant and there was a queue so we headed back to our hotel and ate there. We then watched our favourite programme. My dad then put on a great tune that had a great rhythm.

  33. Miss Coleman says:

    Hi Dylan,
This is a good paragraph using lots of the spellings words-well done.
I’m looking forward to the day when we can all visit the beach again!
It was lovely to see you when you collected your MNP books.

  34. Hello Everyone ! ?

I hope you are all having an amazing day so far
I hope and wish that you are all safe and well ?
For today’s English task I am going to be writing my paragraph using more that two of these spelling words ??

    Paragraph :

At the music ? programme that I am attending at Rosemary Mair , we have to find out what rhythm it is and them we have to rhyme some words to go with the song. We also have to recognise what instruments ? the players were using while we were blind folded so… that is going to be quite tricky. I really recommend going to this programme it is going to be so much fun. I am going their next summer and if you a re asking why I know so much I went on their website:www.Rosemary.Mairprogramme.org(please do not go on this website it does not exist).

    I hope you enjoyed ????

    ~Elena ??

  35. Miss Coleman says:

    Hello Elena,
I did enjoy your paragraph thank you-a creative way of using some of the spelling words.
It was lovely to see you on Monday when you collected your MNP books .

  36. Hi everyone hope you all are doing well at home here is my work for todays grammar.
    Definitions:
Programme: A computer or machine with instructions for the electronics act of a task.
Rhythm: A length of words and phrases in verse as determined by the relation of long, short or stressed and unstressed syllables.
Queue: a line of people or vehicles waiting to be served or approached.
    Sentences:
At home my family and I where watching a very funny PROGRAMME.
Im music there is always a type of RHYTHM that will go with the beat.
During this time people are stress buying so now you will have to go in a QUEUE so it’s not cramped.
Hope you have enjoyed reading my sentences/definitions and Stay Safe and Stay at Home bye?

  37. Miss Coleman says:

    Hi Angieli,
Thank you for sharing your sentences and definitions. You are right, there are so many queues at the moment but it’s important to stay safe.

T-Look at this sentence again and see if you can rewrite it using ‘so’ only once ( and don’t forget to use the suffix -ed).
During this time people are stress buying so now you will have to go in a QUEUE so it’s not cramped.

  38. The queue which dragged on and on was in a swirly whirly shape filled with people. These people were late for their work.
The restaurant that was on the
other side of the street was packed with people, and had a fishy smell like in a drain which flowed through the street. Some people who lived on that street had recognised the smell and recommended everyone to stay indoors.

  39. Miss Coleman says:

Thank you for your paragraph using some of the spelling words Sara. I would stay in if my street smelt of fishy drains too!

  40. Here is my paragraph- I have managed to use all of the words!!!!

My job at the theatre requires me to make sure that I recommend the theatre plays, that I always hand out the programmes and that I manage the queues. In the evening, I have to go to the theatre restaurant and hand out all of the drinks. The people who drink Champagne in the interval are from all kinds of well paid professions.
Although I love working at the theatre, there is one flaw – my boss Gerry never pays me! Whenever I try to tell him, he just changes the subject to something that is not relevant.
One of the best things about working at the theatre is that I get to watch some of the plays. My favourites are musicals, especially ‘My Fair Lady’ because all of the songs have great rhythm and rhyme.

  41. Miss Coleman says:

Hi Erin, It’s lovely to hear from you.
I’m impressed you used all the words and have written such a fabulous paragraph. Well done!
I love musicals and I am looking forward to when I can go the theatre again (but I hope everyone who works there is being paid!).

  42. Hello everyone!
    This is my paragraph.
Two years ago, I went to Paris by Eurostar. It was a very exciting experience as I have never been on such a fast train. Before we boarded, we had to wait in a long queue to get our passports checked.

Once we arrived in Paris, we met up with our French friends who took us to a recommended restaurant where we had a delicious meal. We tried our best to speak French but our pronunciation was really bad and no one could understand what we where saying. However, when I listened to French people speaking, it sounded like their language was full of rhythm and rhyme.

Part of the programme of the trip was to go on a sightseeing tour. While going through Paris, I recognised many famous landmarks. At the moment we are not allowed to travel but hopefully we will be able to return to Paris in a near future.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
    Maia?

  43. Miss Coleman says:

    Hello Maia,
This is a great paragraph and I like how you have kept to the theme of your trip to Paris yet incorporated so many of the spelling words. It will be wonderful when we are all able to travel again and visit such beautiful places.

  44. Hello everyone here is my paragraph.?

The lady ,whose profession is a cashier in a busy restaurant, asked all the people in the queue to line up in a straight line. While asking them to, she started to recognise a very familiar face, it was her mum! She was waving at her, smiling. Finally, after a long day at work, she and her mum walked back home and started watching a tv programme her mum recommended. The characters in it had a very weird pronunciation as she thought it is old English, but she didn’t think that was really relevant however, she noticed that the dialogue rhymes!

I hope you enjoyed reading my paragraph, stay safe.?

  45. Miss Coleman says:

    Hello Renee,
Great paragraph-I would like to see my mum too!
T-Keep to the past tense (check the final sentence)

  46. Hello everyone todays my birthday and it has been good so far this is my paragraph:

Jo was walking down the street thinking of a rhythm for one of her rhymes in her poem she saw the restaurant that her cousin had recommended. Jo decided to take a look since there wasn’t a very long queue. When she got inside she felt like it was relevant for her to be in this restaurant. After Jo had ordered something to eat even though her pronunciation wasn’t great the waiter understood her she realised her favourite programme was tv. The waiters brought her food and put it on the table and when she tried it, it was divine she could tell the chefs were professions. Then when she was ordering desert she didn’t recognise her cousin was there too.

  47. Miss Coleman says:

Happy Birthday Claudia! I hope you had a lovely day.

Well done for including so many of the spelling words in your paragraph.
T-Check your work for missing punctuation.

  48. Ms Robertson says:

    What great paragraphs everyone!
I really enjoyed reading them – thank you. ?
