English Task

Good morning Year 3. I hope you all had a restful half term break. I am missing you very much and I hope to see you soon!

A big well done for all of your home learning so far, I do understand this is not easy and I am so proud of you all for putting in lots of effort each day. Keep up the good work with this! 🙂 🙂

I am back at St Vincent’s this week, so I won’t be able to respond to your work as quickly as usual but I will definitely feedback during the day 🙂

For summer 2, we will continue our English blogs in the same way as we have done. We will focus on reading at the beginning of the week, grammar, spelling and then writing.

We will read an extract (part of a text), answer questions and share our own ideas.

Our text is:
Rabbit & Bear – A Bite in the Night  by Julian Gough & Jim Field

We will focus on Chapter 1 today. Before you begin reading the text look at the questions below.

Task 1 – Reading

Look at the cover of the book. Write a prediction based on the name of the book and using the cover of the book to give you some clues.

Read Chapter 1 HERE. Answer the questions below during reading and after reading.  

Complete your answers in your yellow homework book or post them on the blog.

Task 2 – Comprehension questions
(Answer these in your yellow homework book or on the blog)

Use the text to refer back to. This will help support your answers.

a) Use three adjectives to describe the cave rabbit and bear were sheltering in.
b) Where was bear walking ahead to?
c) What had happened to bears favourite scratching tree?
d) Why do you think rabbit was so worried?
e) Find a sentence in the text to show that rabbit was feeling very afraid.
f) What did bear reply when rabbit said ‘Why aren’t you worrying?!’
g) Where did the woodpecker say he was going? Explain your answer.
h) Are bear and rabbit’s characters different? Explain your answer.

Extension
Continue writing the next part of the story. What happens next?! Did something happen to rabbit? Write a paragraph.

Then a loud crunch came from very near by. It sounded like the world’s largest rabbit eating the world’s largest carrot. Like a monster rabbit, thought rabbit… eating a monster carrot…to give it the energy… to attack!
This time rabbit trembled so much, he was worried his ears would fall off!

  1. I predict that at the start of the story we will meet a bear and a rabbit who are going to have many different adventures.

    I think that bear is the most important character because he never gives up and always tries to find another way out.
    a) Use three adjectives to describe the cave rabbit and bear were sheltering in – Dark,cold,stone
    b) Where was bear walking ahead to? – The bear was walking ahead to his favourite scraching tree
    c) What had happened to bears favourite scratching tree? – The bear’s favourite scratching tree had disappeared
    d) Why do you think rabbit was so worried? – The rabbit was so worried because he heard a loud and scary noise (crunch)
    e) Find a sentence in the text to show that rabbit was feeling very afraid. – This time rabbit was trembling so much, he thought his ears would fall off.
    f) What did bear reply when rabbit said ‘Why aren’t you worrying?!’
    He replied that worrying doesn’t help.
    g) Where did the woodpecker say he was going? Explain your answer. – The woodpecker said he was going to fly to the south because it would be warmer there.
    h) Are bear and rabbit’s characters different? Explain your answer.
    Bear and rabbit’s characters are different because rabbit is always so worried and bear is never worried.

    (A) The cave was dark, rocky, and quiet.
    (B) Bear was walking ahead to the scratching tree.
    (C) His favourite scratching tree was eaten.
    (D) Rabbit was scared because the monster might eat all the trees and him too.
    (E) ” Rabbit’s knees began to tremble”.
    (F) Bear was calm and was looking for breakfast. He said ” worrying doesn’t fix things but breakfast does”.
    (G) The wood pecker said he was going to the south for more fun and warmth.
    (H) Yes because Bear is calm and Rabbit is alarmed.

    Extension:
    Suddenly an even louder “crunch!!!!!” came from Woodpeckers tree and Woodpecker said oh no it’s the monster”. “The monster”!!!!!!!!!!!! screamed Rabbit “w, w, w, what do you m’ m’ mean monster” Woodpecker said what you waaaaaaaa Wham!!!! Woodpecker’s tree had fallen on the floor. Before Bear knew it, Rabbit was already running at full speed, “wait” said Bear and he started running as well. The green blobmonster tried to catch Bear but bear was too fast. Will the blobmonster eat Bear and Rabbit or will they make it…….

    1. The story will be about someone munching something because it also said ‘A bite in the night’
    2. Rabbit, Bear, Woodpecker, and the Bunny monster
    3. I would say Rabbit and Bear because they would have to be careful with the Rabbit monster.

  7. Hi miss I already read this book in year 1!
    but I forgot everything but I read chapter 1
    I predict that the bear was trying to make something but he needed oak but it was cutter of.
    Bunny and bear.
    I think that bunny is a important character because when bear said let’s have breakfast but bunny was worrying and I felt like bunny wanted to investigate who ate the tree?!

    Reading : Rabbit & Bear Task 1

    Prediction

    I think this book is about a rabbit and a bear that are best friends and they slept together, played together and loved the same things as each other. One night when they were sleeping they heard something chomping down on something they both were frightened by that sound. But the next morning they said to each other to check everything and they found a tree with an unusual point. Rabbit thought that something bit it bear agreed so they searched for some of their friend that either eat wood or use wood for a use of something.

    I think bear and rabbit are the important characters because their going to find out who the culprit is and they are the main characters.

    Task 2

    1. dark , gloomy and shady.
    2. Her scratching tree.
    3. Somebody took a bite out of her scratching tree.
    4. Rabbit was scared because he thought a giant bunny took a bite out of the trees.
    5. Rabbit trembled
    6. He said breakfast would make it better.
    7. Wood pecker was going south where all the birds were having a party.
    8. They are different because bear is fearless and rabbit isn’t and their different animals.

    Extension Task

    I think in the next paragraph they will have a friend beaver and they’ll ask questions because he likes to chomp on wood.

    My prediction is that a beaver came at night and took a big bite of the tree and bear and rabbit were very confused what has happened.

    Bear, Rabbit and Woodpecker.

    Bear and Rabbit are the most important because they are trying to solve the mystery of were all the trees went and because they are at the front cover of the book.

    Task 2
    a) dark, cosy and warm
    b) Bear was walking ahead to her favourite scratching tree.
    c) Her favourite scratching tree had disappear.
    d) Rabbit was worried because he thought there was a big monster eating the trees.
    e) Rabbits knees began to tremble.
    f) Because worrying doesn’t fix things.
    g) The Woodpecker said she was going South for the Winter because there are more parties and fun in the hot weather.
    h) Bear and Rabbit are different because Bear is not scared and Rabbit is terrified.

    Instead of Rabbit’s ears falling of he was so scared that he just fainted. Suddenly a brown, fury animal that they never seen before stood in front of them. He said ” Hello! My name is Beaver.” Rabbit bumped in and said ”Have you seen a big Rabbit Monster eating all the trees?!!!”
    ”Who you call a big Rabbit Monster?” said Beaver.

    I think the most important character is Bear because he is smart and knowes what is the best to do.

    d.I think the rabbit was worried because the trees had started to disappeared from the forest and he thinkes a very scary monster had eaten the trees.

    g.The woodpecker was going south for the winter because is will be more parties,more fun and it is warmer .
    h.I think bear and rabbits character are different because the rabbit is so easy to scare and the bear is clever and never afraid they are also different because they are different animals.

  18. I think that the book will be about a bear and a rabbit that find a tree that has been sawn down in a forest. They are very surprised that an extremely strong tree could break it looks like tooth marks
    but how cold an animal eat a tree

    I think the bear and the monkey are important characters because
    the ones talking a lot about the tree.
    I think the next paragraph will bee about they have to stop the
    fat rabbit from eating the rest of the wood in the forest.

    By looking at the front cover I think the story is about a little rabbit that is friends with a bear. By looking at the front cover it tells me that the Rabbit and the Bear looks surprised and shocked at the tree which looks like it has been bitten at night.

    The three characters in The Story are a bear a rabbit and a woodpecker.
    2. The two most important characters is the bear and rabbit because the name is mentioned in the story.

    Suddenly the Crunch start getting louder and louder and louder rabbit started to close its eyes until a loud
    stamp came rabbit said Run everyone started running and look back and saw harmless voiceless gigantic scary monster

    When I looked at the cover of the book, i saw that a rabbit and a bear looked surprised and horrified at the tree ,which looks like it has been bitten at night.

    2. The important characters are Rabbit and the Bear because it is based on the text. Bear and rabbit are having a conversation.

    3. Woodpecker, bear and rabbit.

    Task 2
    1. A quiet ,dark ,Echoed cave.

    2. They were looking ahead at the honey Tree.

    3 . Bears favourite scratching tree has been bitten.

    4. Rabbit was worried because a animal was eating all of the trees

    5. This time rabbits tumbled so much he was worried his ears would fall off.

    6. Bear said to rabbit “because worrying doesn’t fix anything”.

    7. The Woodpecker said “I am packing to go to south and going to celebrate & have fun.”

    8. Rabbits character is scared and bear’s character is brave because bear is bigger and rabbit is smaller. so it’s different.

    As the noise got louder ,rabbit screamed and passed out . Rabbit said “bear wake up”. Bear continues to shake rabbit so he would open his eyes . Then suddenly rabbit opened his eyes and was petrified but glad to see bear. He gave bear a big hug and said “I’m so glad to see you!”

    I think the story is about a bear wanting to always chase the rabbit.

    Bear,rabbit and a woodpecker.

    Rabbit and the bear are the most important characters in the book
    because it is tiled with them on the cover.

    A/Dark ,small and spooky.
    B/Bear was walking torwards woodpeckers tree.
    C/Something or someone ate bears scratching tree .
    D/Rabbit was worried . He thought it was a big rabbit eating carrots.
    E/This time the rabbit trembled so much. He thought his ears were gonna fall off.
    F/ Bear said,”worrying does not fix anything”.
    G/woodpecker said he wants to fly south where its warmer.
    H/They are different because Rabbit is smaller and always worries .Bear is bigger and not scared.

    The woodpecker had flown south. Bear and rabbit still hear crunching. They go to look to see who’s making all this noise again.
    To their surprise there was a beaver with his mouth full of wood.
