Hello Class 4!

This week is our last week working on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest which means this will be your last writing task linked to the story.

Today we are going to work on a creative writing challenge set by the Primary Shakespeare Company…

Your task is to retell The Tempest is just 100 words! It sounds much easier than it really is!

Click the image above to see some useful tips and advice to begin your writing. Try not to only focus on getting in the main points of the story but also focus on ensuring your writing engages your reader.

You might find this planning sheet useful…

Planning Sheet

You can choose whether to hand-write your work or type it on the blog but just remember you only need to send me the first part of your work so that I can give you some feedback before you continue writing. Don’t forget to check your spellings and punctuation before posting!

I look forward to reading your work!
From Miss Lee 🙂

  1. Can we use less than 100 words?

  2. Miss Lee says:

As long as it still makes sense, you just can’t go over 100!

  3. i have done the story miss lee!

  4. Miss Lee says:

    Wow well done!

  5. hello miss lee, are you allowed to go over 100

  6. Miss Lee says:

I’m afraid not, it’s tricky to meet the word count!

  7. Mayowa(=^-^=) says:

    It’s hard !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Miss Lee says:

Yes it is a tricky challenge! I know you can do it though!

  9. Is it just the first bit of the story?

  10. Miss Lee says:

You need to try and write the whole story in just 100 words!

  11. Amarissa ???? says:

    It’s not that hard ??

  12. can we start from the island?

  13. Miss Lee says:

See if you can do the entire story! Try writing words such as ‘do not’ as ‘don’t’ to use less words. Use shorter sentences rather than using the words ‘and’ or ‘then’ too many times.

  14. Once there was a person called prospero the duke of Milan, his wife died and prospero sulked, his brother took other but then I didn’t go well.antino then had a plan he put prospero and baby Miranda in sunken ship but they survived and were stranded on a deserted island.

A storm hit and alonso king of Naples ship got struck and also get stranded on the island and Ferdinand was lost

Ferdinand Met prospero and gave Ferdinand tasks to test his love on Miranda

Then the couple had a marriage and spirits came from gods to celebrate

Then prospero set a trap to catch Caliban Stephano and Trinculo called the golden washing line then we’re chased by dogs

Then they all got together and then went home

I tried to get 100 words hopefully I got it

  15. Miss Lee says:

So close Albert, I count 128!
Try making some of your sentences shorter to avoid using ‘and’ or ‘then’ too often.
Remember to make sure you have used capital letters correctly (for example names of people and places).

  16. Amarissa says:

    Hello miss
My email and password is not working.

  17. Miss Lee says:

Oh no! Have you definitely clicked Log-In? When you go to the page it has space to enter your log in details but if you haven’t clicked log in it thinks you are trying to make a new log in and it wont work.
If that doesn’t work I will email the Primary Shakespeare Company for you.

  18. Raimundo says:

Hello Miss Lee Here is my First part pf the tempest.

There was a ship ? that carried a group of people, named Prospero, Miranda, Ferdinand, Alonso and Antonio. There was a Storm so they were on an Island ? , Ferdinand and Miranda wanted to fall in love ? , but Prospero wanted to stop ✋ that. Prospero had a Servant named Ariel who was the Magical ?‍♀️ Spirit of the Island ?. Prospero made Ferdinand his slave to test him is he was good for Miranda so he let them fall in love.

  19. Miss Lee says:

    Well done Raimundo!
I count 79 words so you haven’t got many more to write the rest of the story. You might want to cut it down a little. Proof-read your work to see if you can take any words out but also make sure your sentences still make sense. Good Luck!

  20. { amarissa} yes it is a long pharagraph... says:

    Hello miss it works now

Long long ago, there was a happy city in Italy called Milan.the duke of the city was called Prospero.prospero was a good and generous duke and he listened very carefully for what his subjects had to say, and gave very good advice for people whoever needed it.his people thought that he was the best duke Milan had ever had!everyone loved prospero.they also loved his beautiful wife.when the couple had a daughter, Miranda, the whole city was delighted for them.a huge celebration took place, which prospero making sure everyone had a wonderful time.a feast was provided.the freshest of fruit, the flavoursome vegetables, the most succulent of roast meats, wonderful drinks and great entertainment.it seems that life could not get any better.but, that was true!it could only get worse.which it did, when prosperos wife…died.a great sadness fell over the city.but an even greater sadness fell over prospero.he Locked himself in a libary, deep inside his palace, talking to nobody.one day his brother Antonio, went to him and said,”brother you must stop this!the city needs you.nobody is ruling! no one is making decisions! You have to become duke again!prospero sat in silence, unspeaking.he whispered,”no, you do it.”so, Antonio did.secretly,he was delighted.he was always jealous of his brother, and the power he wielded, and the respect he had.in the libary, prospero fell in love again.but not white any living creature,no.in that libary was a special collection of books.the spines, glimmering with golden letters, dancing white strange images, books of magic.and it was the magic within those pages that captured his heart.prospero began to spend more time in his libary, his face buried in his precious books.

  21. Miss Lee says:

I am glad it is working!
This paragraph is brilliant and written really well! You now have the challenge of cutting it down to 100 words. I counted 264 so think about any words that you could shorted (just like when we shorten ‘would not’ to ‘wouldn’t’) and see if there are any words that you can take out whilst still making sure your sentences make sense and engage the reader.
    Good luck!

  22. Prospero (former duke of Milan) and his daughter Miranda are sent out to sea on a leaky boat by king Antonio and King Alonso of Naples (his enemy). Prospero saves them with magic and brings them to a desert island. Twelve years later, Antonio and Alonso are shipwrecked on that same island when Prospero conjures a storm. While Prospero gets his revenge, his slave plots against him and Miranda falls in love with Alonso’s son Ferdinand. Prospero gives up sorcery and forgives them all. They then all sail home for the marriage of Miranda and Ferdinand. Prospero becomes duke again.

  23. Miss Lee says:

    100 WORDS! Well done Vincent!
Tomorrow you are going to publish your work by writing it out neatly on paper. You might want to start this today and think about how you could decorate your work beautifully. You could make a frame or create a picture to go with your writing.

  24. ?amarissa ??????????????????????????????? says:

    Alright miss??

  25. I have done it in my book ?

  26. Miss Lee says:

Great! Can you send in a photo of it?

  27. Hi ? Miss Lee,
    Here is my story.

prospero duke of Milan and Miranda were sent out to sea ? on a leaky boat by prospero brother Antonio. But Prospero mended the boat ? with magic!! They ended up at a island ? half way between Italy and Africa. A few years later as a big storm ⛈ can Antonio and Alonso were on that island too. Miranda and Ferdinand fell in love ? but Prospero didn’t want that. So he made Ferdinand be his slave to test if he was good for Miranda, and he let them fall in love!

  28. Miss Lee says:

Great work Tijne! Before you add the ending of the story you might want to see if there are any words to cut out as you only have 12 words left until you meet the word count.
Check you have used capital letters for names and places and also used ‘an’ and ‘a’ in the correct way (an before a word that starts with a vowel and ‘a’ before a word that starts with a consonant).
    Good luck!

  29. I have done it.

  30. Mayowa(=^-^=) says:

Can I do it on a peace of paper because I don’t have my yellow book.

  31. Miss Lee says:

Of course you can do it on a piece of paper! Then just take a photo and send in!

  32. I have finished the sheet

  33. Miss Lee says:

Great! Did you manage to write the entire story in just 100 words?

  34. Paolo ??? says:

Prospero, Duke of Milan, was put in a leaky boat with his daughter Miranda by his brother Antonio and Alonso, King of Naples. They arrived to an island, finding Ariel and Caliban.
Twelve years later a magic storm sank the ship of his enemies. Alonso’s son Ferdinand reached shore and fell in love with Miranda. Sebastian and Antonio tried to kill Alonso. Caliban met Stephano and Trinculo: they plotted against Prospero.
Ferdinand and Miranda got married whilst Trinculo and Stephano were tricked by a line of fine clothes and chased by dogs.
Prospero decided to stop vengeance and pardoned everybody.

    Dear Miss Lee,

I have watched again the videos and have done exactly 100 words but it was hard… it took me a long time to keep cutting the sentences.

  35. Miss Lee says:

Hello Paolo, fantastic work well done! I know this was a tricky challenge but you did it! Great work!
Now think about how you can present your work for publishing tomorrow. You might want to write it out neatly and create a picture to go with it, or you might want to make a beautiful frame for your writing.

P.S. I just received your R.E. map from the office today! It is wonderful, such lovely ideas, well done! I will upload it onto yesterday’s blog!

  36. Beloved duke Prospero was stuck on an island with his daughter. He sees a boat with his brother and the king. Magic storm, boat sinks. Crew land on ashore. Ferdinand loves Miranda. The King lost Ferdinand. Trinculo ,Caliban, Stephano plan Prospero’s murder, Ariel tells Prospero. Miranda and Ferdinand marry. Ariel saves King Alonso from Sebastian and Antonio. Ariel brings everyone together. They all go to sleep. Prospero forgives everyone of what they have done . They all return to Naples for the wedding. Prospero frees Ariel and Caliban. Prospero beaks his staff and puts it with his book in the sea.

  37. Miss Lee says:

I count 101! So close! Just make sure your writing really retells the story and engages the reader. Some sentences in the middle of your writing sound a little bit like you are just listing the main events. I know this is tricky with the word limit but I think you can do it! Good luck!

  38. Antonio, Alonso and Ferdinand are ship-wrecked on an island by Prospero who seeks revenge. Antonio and Alonso deposed him as Duke of Milan 12 years ago, forcing Prospero and Miranda to flee to that same island. Prospero torments the survivors using magic and the help of his faithful spirit-servant Ariel. When Miranda and Ferdinand fall in love, Prospero relents and changes his mind. Instead of enacting his revenge, he forgives the plotters and accepts the return of his dukedom. The families are reunited, and all conflict is resolved. Ferdinand and Miranda get married. Prospero fulfils his promise and frees Ariel.

  39. Miss Lee says:

Hello Sophie! 100 words exactly! Very impressive!
Well done for using punctuation accurately and for using some ambitious vocabulary to engage your reader!
Now think about how you will present your work beautifully ready for tomorrow’s publishing blog!

  40. Miss Lee says:

William, thank you for sending in your work!
I am so impressed that you manages to include some speech using inverted commas after we looked at them this week, whilst still maintaining the word limit! Well done!
Just make sure before you write it out in neat that your writing inside the inverted commas starts with a capital letter and you have punctuation inside the inverted commas. Also check you have used apostrophes accurately.

  41. Miss Lee says:

Pablo, well done for getting exactly 100 words! You have included the main parts of the story, super work! I am very impressed!
When you come to write out your final version tomorrow, think about how you will present your work. You might want to design a picture to go with your writing or make a frame or page bored to go around your work.

  42. Hello Miss Lee! This is just the start of my story. Hope I did it right ?.
Prospero and Antonio were brothers. One day, Antonio took over and wanted everything to himself. He sent away Prospero, the rightful duke of Milan in a leaky boat which went to a strange island. He then summond a tempest and met Ariel and Caliban. After 12 years, Miranda who was Prospero’s daughter fell in love with Ferdinand, son of Alonso, king of Naples. They then had a wedding where 3 goddesses came to bless their marriage.

  43. Miss Lee says:

A great start Clare well done! Your sentences are engaging to the reader and clearly explain the story so far. Just check the spelling of ‘summoned’.
The challenge now is completing the story in just 24 words as you have used 76 so far! Good luck!

  44. Hello,

Prospero is a duke a Milan. He was very happy because his people like him. His wife and him had a baby but the his wife died and he was really sad. He locked himself in the library and his brother Antonio toke his place because he told him. But Antonio was not liked like Prospero. So Antonio went to see his friend Alonso the king of Naples. He asked him to take Prospero and his daughter in a boat with halls. Prospero he was sent in the boat and Prospero’s friend Gonzalo put his magic book in the boat.

  45. Miss Lee says:

    Hello Louis!
Super work for reaching exactly 100 words! Here is the challenge though… you need to read 100 words while telling the entire story! It’s tricky but I think you can do it! Good luck!
