Today, we are going to have a grammar focus. As a starter, please complete the work below in your Home Learning Book.

On Thursday, we are going to be writing a letter from the Queen to the public asking them to find the thief.

Do you think that this letter will be informal or formal?

  • You will need to include:
  • Description of the thief
  • Details regarding the stolen jewels
  • Details regarding the generous reward

The way we talk and write involves formal and informal English. We don’t treat everyone the same way. You wouldn’t talk to a baby in the same way you talk to your best friend. And you wouldn’t talk to your best friend in the same way you talk to your teacher.

We use formal language in situations that are serious or that involve people we don’t know well. Informal language is more commonly used in situations that are more relaxed and involve people we know well.

Hello, 

I am writing to let you know that a pizza I was unlucky enough to order at your restaurant was rubbish.

The cheese was gross, the tomatoes gone off and the base chewy as rubber.

Never will I eat at your joint again. Not only was the food pants, but the waiting staff were snooty, and I had to wait two hours for my grub!

I want a refund, to be paid now.

    Well done Jeanne! You have definitely made the letter more formal.
    Just a couple of tips:
    In your second paragraph, just check the tense of the verb ‘order’. Should it be past or present?
    Also in your final sentence, just check for missing words.
    Other than that, I think it is great and you have structured your sentences well to create a formal tone.

    I am writing to let you know that the pizza I was unfortunate enough to order at your resteraunt was debris.

    The cheese was flagrant, the tomatoes expired and the base was tougher than rubber.

    Never will I eat at your resteraunt again. Not only the food was grotesque, but the waiting staff were arrogant, and I had to wait two hours for my serving!

    I request a refund, to be paid now.

    I am writing to inform you that I came to your restaurant last week and it took me an unusually long time to order and receive my pizza. That was not the only problem; the pizza was awfully unpleasant.

    I was looking forward to a fresh Italian pizza as it had said on the front door of your restaurant but instead I received a pizza which had mouldy tomatoes and tasteless cheese served on an under cooked base.

    I am extremely disappointed with the quality of your pizza and with the service received by your staff; When asked asked for a knife and fork I was informed there were only knives available. I also noticed, the staff were very slow and I had to wait nearly two and a half hours for my order.

    I am writing to complain about the condition of the playground. Over the last two weeks, I have noticed a great deal of litter. I reckon that this litter is a health hazard. For example, yesterday a year 4 boy fell over and cut his hand on a broken bottle. The boy in question needed four stitches. Furthermore, the litter is an eyesore. Our school has beautiful views of the river and these spoiled by the litter. I believe that there are a number of things that you could do to rectify this problem. Firstly, you could purchase additional litterbins. This would help prevent people discarding their litter recklessly.
