Our new topic in Year 4 is Extreme Earth!

The Earth is our home and it is our responsibility to care for it. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and more extreme as a result of climate change. These disasters demonstrate the immense power of nature and remind us to always respect and look after the most special of planets.

This is a very exciting topic and we will be learning all about how these natural disasters happen and what we can do to prevent them.

Each week you will have Curriculum homework which links to our topic posted on Google Classroom. You will be able to use the skills and knowledge from the homework in our lessons!

Homework will commence from Monday 9th January.

Before then, I would like you to find out more about the Extreme Earth. Use a child-friendly search engine such as Kiddle to answer the following questions as a comment below:

1.) What do you think makes weather happen?

2.) What are some natural disasters that you have heard about or seen?

3.) What would you most like to find out about during this topic?

Well done for your first few days back in 2023! We are going to be reading some really interesting books which I am extreme-ly excited about!

Mr. Kersys.

  2. Daisy O’Neill says:

    1. Weather is made up of six main things. Temperature, cloud formation, humidity, rain, pressure in the air and wind. A small change to any of these can create a different weather pattern.

    2. Some natural disasters I have heard about are floods, tornados, tsunamis, wild fires and volcano eruptions.

    3. I would like to find out why more and more natural disasters are happening and how they are made. I would also like to know how many people live on Earth and how many animals live on Earth.

  3. Dear Mr. Kersys,
This is the information I found out:

Weather is the day-to-day or hour-to-hour change in our world. Weather includes wind, lightning, storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, rain, hail and snow.

What do you think makes weather happen?
1)What makes weather happen is depending on the temperature which now
is getting extreme because of climate change. (This means that if we want it to get better we have to care for our environment.) It also happens depending where the sun is in the sky.

What are some natural disasters that you have heard about or seen?
    2) Some natural disasters I have heard about are tsunamis, earthquakes,(my grandpa when he was small he was sleeping and suddenly the earth started to move and his bed moved too!) avalanches, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanic explosions, snow storms and floods. Some natural disasters I have seen are storms.

What would you most like to find out about during this topic?
    3) What I would mostly like to find about during our topic is how people act when this happens.

    Dear Mr. Kersys,
    This is what I think:
    1) I think that the seasons change as the Earth moves around the Sun and tilts toward or away from it. So the seasons and the weather we are having depends on where we live on the planet/how long we are exposed to the Sun each day🌞.
When the droplets in the clouds get too large and heavy, they fall from the clouds as rain, or if it is cold enough, as snow🌧.

    2) Some natural disasters that I have heard about or seen are Heatwaves,Floods,Tornadoes,Hurricanes,Lightning and Thunder.

    3) How can we take advantage of extreme weather?

  5. 1. Weather on Earth is caused by heat from the sun and movement of the air. All weather happens in the lower layer of Earth’s atmosphere, which is a layer of gases surrounding Earth. The sun’s heat warms the air in this layer to different temperture levels in different.
    2. Some natural disasters I’ve heard of or seen of are tornados, tsunamis, a monsoon, volcanic eruptions, coastal flooding, heatwave, drought, avalanche, hurricanes and an earthquake.
3.I would like to learn how these things happen and maybye experience an actual hurricane or earthquake.

  6. Erietta😻 says:

    1. The sun rays heat up Earth at different temperatutes. This hot and cold air moves around causing different weather.

2.I have seen a flood in Greece , and a big fire in loutra Edipsou.

3.I want to learn more about tornados because I want to see how strong they are, what causes them and how to stop a tornado.

  7. Margaux Year 4 says:

1.) Weather is made up of six main components. These are temperature, atmospheric pressure, cloud formation, wind, humidity and rain.
2.) Some natural disasters that I have heard and seen are tornadoes, typhoons, thunderstorms and earthquakes.
3.) During our topic I would like to know how the tsunamis were made

  8. 1.The movement of air and the heat of the sun causes weather.

    2. I have heard of floods in Pakistan.
3.I really want to learn about how a volcano erupts and how underwater hurricanes form.

  9. 1 what makes weather happen is the water cycle.

2 i have heard of lots of floods.
3 i want to learn more about tornadoes.

  10. The clouds and the sun makes weather also the sun rays heats the earth the sun is 93 million miles away from the earth

  11. 1. Weather on Earth is caused by the heat from the sun and movement of the air.

    2. My mum told me some stories about natural disasters that happened in the Philippines like flooding, earthquake, volcanic eruptions, heatwave and typhoons.

    3. I want to learn the factors that affects the weather and also more about climate change and what we can do to stop it.

  12. Dear Mr Kersys ,
This is all the information I have found about :
    1) I think the heat from the sun, wind, clouds. Moisture or water vapor( gas )in the air also affects the weather .

2)I have driven through a flood on a bridge and I have heard about some basements being flooded near our street .

    3) I would like to find out about hurricanes and tornadoes

  13. 1.) What do you think makes weather happen?

What makes weather happen is the water cycle and the water cycle makes rain.

2.) What are some natural disasters that you have heard about or seen?

The natural disaster I have experienced is storm Eunice and it was very windy(100
mph)even the O2 arenas cover blew off! What a windy day. And I heard about an earthquake that happened in Albania! Was very shaky in Albania though and I encountered a thunderstorm I heard thunder and saw a lightning bolt! Was an electric experience.

3.) What would you most like to find out about during this topic?

I want to find out how tornadoes are formed because by learning how they are formed we learn how to prevent or avoid them.

  14. 1. Weather on earth is caused by heat from the sun and movement of the air and weather is composed of six main components: temperature, atmospheric pressure, cloud formation, wind, humidity and rain.
2.I have heard that some natural disasters are : volcanoes, tornados, earthquake, flooding, forest fire.

3.) What would you most like to find out about during this topic?
I want to know how to survive extreme weathers.

  18. 1.) The weather is caused by the heat from the sun, clouds, movement from the air and the Earth’s atmosphere which is a layer of gases that surround the Earth. Moisture in the air affects the way clouds form, the wind brings changes in the weather e.g rainy days or clear skies.
2.) I have seen/heard of extreme weather like lightning, droughts, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes,Volcanic eruptions, snow storms.
3.) What I really want to know is how does lightning start ? What is lightning made of ?

  19. This topic looks so fun! I can’t wait until you can tell us all about it.

  20. James Sedurifa [Year 4] says:

    1. I think that the heat of the sun and the movement of air causes weather. All weather happens in the lower layer of the earth’s atmosphere, which is a layer of gases surrounding the earth. The sun’s heat warms the air in this layer to different temperature levels in different places. Warm air rises, and cold air then rushes in underneath to replace it.

    2. Natural disasters that I have seen or heard about are avalanches, sandstorms, lightning/thunder , famines, hailstorms, blizzards, earthquakes, floods and heat waves.

    3. In this topic I would like to learn about the gases and minerals that causes natural disasters.

    Dear Mr Keyrsy’s
This is the information I found out:

1.What makes weather happen is some weather absorbe’s the heat.

2.Jamacia has been rainy twice a year and the reast is really really HOT!!!

3.What I would like to learn more about is do hot country’s ever snow😀

  23. Isabella Manning says:

    Dear Mr. Kerseys,

1:There are six elements that create the weather around Earth.
These are temperature, atmospheric pressure, cloud formation, wind, humidity, and rain. The temperature and heat from the Sun, alongside the movement of the wind, affect the weather conditions here on Earth. Sometimes when the weather conditions are permanent, we call it a climate. Climates are sometimes caused by how close or far a country or continent is from the Equator such as Antarctica or Brazil.

    2. Examples of extreme weather that I am aware of include the heavy flooding on the 15th of November across England and Wales that resulted in many homes being flooded and also losing electricity.
Another example is the deadly winter storm that swept through America only 2 weeks ago causing 59 deaths because of blizzard conditions and ferocious winds. I heard of this because of my mum’s friends who live in New York.

    3. During the investigation of this topic, I would like to discover how extreme weather conditions are caused and how to prevent loss of life during them.

  24. 1) I know the rain,snow,volcano,earthquake,fire in the forest,thunder,tornado and tsunami.

    2) I have see in the summer in greece thunders up the sea.I have see in my neighbor a house on fire.I also have been in my school in greece and it happend a small earthquake.

    3) I like to now more about tornado and what we can do to help the people when a tornado is coming.

  25. Sounds cool.
