Good morning Class 4!
Here is your maths task for today…
This week we are looking at adding and subtracting.

Workbook: 4A
Chapter: 2
Worksheets: 1 and 2

Some of you may have collected your Maths No Problem book from school and you might have finished these worksheets in class earlier in Year 4.
If so, have a look at the worksheets. Did you get all of them correct? If not, check back through and see if you understand the question now.
If you did get them correct, try today’s challenge in your yellow home learning book:

Today’s challenge involves working out a recipe for Ariel’s spell in The Tempest:

Addition

In your home learning book, write down as many words or phrases which mean ‘add’ in maths.

One example is ‘find the sum’ but don’t let this confuse you, it just means add the numbers!
Let’s try…

FIND THE SUM OF 2314 AND 4240

When we add numbers we always start with the units first because if the units add to 10 or more, we will have to carry the number of tens into the tens column. Like this:

So, the answer is 6554

Sometimes, we might be asked to find the total. Again, don’t let this confuse you, it just means add the numbers! We sometimes need to add in real life, for example adding amounts of money.
Let’s look at an example…

Remember to add the units first…

8 + 5 = 13 so we have to carry the 1 ten into the tens column before adding the rest of the numbers.
Next, we add the tens: 1 + 3 + 5 = 9
And finally, the hundred, although there is only 1 and nothing else to add.

So, our answer is £193

(always remember to add the pound sign back to your answer if you are adding amounts of money).

Now try the worksheets and the challenge if you are feeling up to it!
If you have any questions, just ask! I am here to help!
Good luck and enjoy!
