Workbook: 6B

Chapter: 9 Algebra

Lessons: 3 and 4  Describing a Pattern

Printer-friendly version: Tuesday maths blog

Good morning Year 6!

Today we will continue to revise patterns and in particular expressing a missing number algebraically.

First, have a look at this demonstration:

We can focus on a pattern, which emerges if the middle number of the 5 consecutive numbers is put in the centre of the pattern.

Notice that the sum is 3 times the value of the centre number. We can express this as a general rule. If the middle value was called p, what would the sum be? Some will suggest 3 ×p or p × 3. We can write 3 x p as 3(p) or simply as 3p.

Once you complete the MNP worksheets. Try the extension: Expressing Missing Number Problems Algebraically Activity Sheet Pack
