Workbook: 5A
Chapter: 3 Multiplication and Division
Lesson: 17 Dividing 3-Digit and 4-Digit Numbers

Printer-friendly version:Monday maths blog

Good morning Year 5!

I will be setting one worksheet from now on with some extra consolidation and extension work. This will ensure we revisit what we need to before the end of term.

Today’s focus: Dividing 3-digit and 4-digit numbers.

Let’s have a look at this demonstration of solving a division problem:

As you can see, there are different ways to solve the problem. You can use number bonds to break apart one of the numbers to make dividing easier. Which number would you break apart? How can we break it apart so that it is easy to divide? Are there any clues in the question that can help us break apart one of the numbers?

Have a look at the divisor. A divisor is a number by which another number is to be divided.

So, because 3 is the divisor, 930 can easily be broken into 900 and 30 because both of those numbers can be divided by 3 easily. Is there another way we can break apart the number? Look at the number discs – they represent the number and so you can divide it into equal groups.

These videos may help you to recall division of three digit and four digit numbers:

Once you have completed the worksheet, consolidate your learning by trying this: Division consolidation

Then, if you feel confident try the extension:Extension – Divide 4 Digits by 1 Digit

Here are the answers: ANSWERS Extension – Divide 4 Digits by 1 Digit

Please write in the comments if you have any questions!

Good luck.

Note: I will be on an online course this morning after our Zoom call so I will not be able to respond to comments until the training has finished. Thank you in advance for your patience!

  13. Hi everyone.
I have done the maths extension since the pages in my book were ripped out. Found quite easy and I think I got most of them right.

    That is great!

  15. Hello everyone, I just finished the extension; it was really fun and I only got one wrong. The worksheets were a bit easy but I still enjoyed them. I haven’t done ✅ the division consolation yet but I will try it. (It looks like some of the things are for two people ?).

  16. Mrs Avdiu says:

Hi Zavan! They can be done alone too, it’s just an option as I know some children are doing work with another child over FaceTime sometimes 🙂 I am glad you enjoyed it and the fact you found it easy shows how confident you are in that topic!
