This week we’re going to do some revision on money and solving problems involving money.

The biggest mistake that we sometimes make, is forgetting that money comes in certain amounts. So, for example, if we are asked for 2 coins that make up 10p, we might say 2p and 8p. While there is a 2p coin, there isn’t an 8p coin, and so, even though the Maths is correct (2+8=10), the answer is wrong because we are talking about money.

Today we are looking at calculating different amounts of money. If you want to remind yourselves and warm up your brains, you can have a go at Worksheet 1 & Worksheet 2,   which practise recognising coins and adding notes together.

We’ll be looking at Worksheet 3 together, which is adding different amounts together. You need to be careful to coin the pounds and pence separately and write them correctly.

Have a look at the Guided Practise:

For question 1, you can add up the coins and it comes to less than 100p. This means it is less than a pound so you just need to worry about the pennies. But for question 2, there are pounds and pence. Count up the pounds and then count up  the pence, keeping the totals separate. We would say the total as “three pounds and 65 pence” but would write it at £3.65 or £3 and 65p.

Have a go working through Worksheet 3.

Once you have done your Maths No Problem lesson, try this BBC Bitesize lesson which has a video and three additional activities for you to do.

Let me know how you get on!
