This week we’re going to practise some of our calculation skills. We’ll do some adding and taking away this week, and then some multiplying and dividing next week.

Today’s Maths:

Workbook:  2A

Chapter: 2 Addition and Subtraction

Lesson:  5 & 6 Adding with Renaming

While we were at school, we did lots of practise with adding number together. Sometimes we could do it in our heads, and sometimes we had to write it down. Even if you could do it in your head, try to get into the habit of writing in down to check your answer. Column method is the best way to do this, can you remember how to lay out column method?

It is the best way because you can then add your ones first and then your tens. That way the numbers aren’t too big and you can try to work them out in your head.

When the addition in the ones column produces a number than is 2 digits, you have to carry the tens over. Maths No Problem call this RENAMING, because you have to rename the number (e.g. in the example below: the ones columns adds up to give number 14, which is renamed as 1 ten and 4 ones).

In Worksheet 5, you just have to add a number in the ones column, but you may need to carry one over to the tens column. In Worksheet 6 you have to add two 2-digit numbers. For questions 3 and 4, please write out your own column method to find the answers – don’t just guess!

Don’t forget to get your parents to check the answers on Maths No Problem to see if you got them all right.

*This is one of the most important skills to learn as you build on it each year with bigger numbers. One of the best ways to get more confident with it is to know your mental maths and to be able to add any two single digits together without using your fingers or a diagram.

  • Try this activity to practise adding to 20.
  • Play Hit the Button up to 10 and 20
  • Go back at do Worksheet 1-4 in Chapter 2 of Maths No Problem

*If you feel confident with column method, then you can start applying it to solve problems.

  • In this problem, you need to use the numbers 1-6 to fill the side of a triangle, with each side equalling the number in the middle.
  • These questions get you to practise using the symbols <, > and =.

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below and I’ll try to help you! Good luck!
