Skill: I can solve word problems using addition and subtraction.

Today we are going to apply the column addition and subtraction method to solve word problems.

First of all, let’s look at the bar model as a simple way of representing our answers.

Here is a bar model to represent the problem.
For this question, the first bar should be shorter than the first as it represents fewer pencils.
When we want to find the total, we can add the two parts, which are 15 and 23.

Word Problems
When we are solving word problems it is important that we read the question carefully, think about the language used to help us understand it and work out what operation we need to use before solving. We can use the RUCSAC method. See below.

For this problem, we know the total children in the school band. We need to work out how many are girls.
36 – 19 = 17
