Now that we know out 2D shapes and can make patterns with them, today we’re going to work out how to move and turn them.

When moving a shape on a grid, I find the easiest way to count it is to draw a cross on a corner and count each corner. Even though it came seem easier to count the whole squares, this can get confusing with bigger shapes.

This particularly helps when you have a more complicated shape. You can plot the movements of each corner of the shape and then recreate the shape in the new location.

Once you have done the In Focus and the Guided Practise from the Textbooks, work through these two worksheets to practise moving and turning shapes accurately. Don’t forget to get your grown-up to mark it for you!

*If you are finding this tricky, have a look at this video for help. It can be hard to remember all the directions. Play a game with your family where they tell you how to move using different steps and turning left or right.

* If you have finished and want another activity to do, try this lesson on rotation. It recaps what we have been learning and introduces other mathematical language to move shapes.

  1. Hi Miss

I am up to date on my maths and I really enjoyed this pattern recognition exercise!

  2. Miss Carruthers says:

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Try and set some shape questions for your family and then you can mark their work!

  3. I found it hard and I will practice more to try and understand it.

  4. Miss Carruthers says:

It can be quite hard Joshua as you have to be really neat and careful when counting the squares. Look at my picture above to see how I count the corners and see if that helps you.

  5. Sophia found this hard . The first bit was ok but the latter part where you have to replot the shapes can be confusing . We used a cut out flag to answer the questions . I think we need to practise more ….

  6. The activity was fun once we figured out a way to print off the graphs. We have completed todays tasks.

  7. Emilia and Isabella says:

    All done Miss!
    It helped counting the corners.
Turning shapes was fun.. we cut out shapes-flags and practised.

  8. Dear Miss Carruthers,

All done!Tricky at first but then it got easier.

  9. Kristian’s mom says:

It was a bit tricky figuring out what the picture of a shape would look like after a few quarter-turn rotations anticlock-wise and then a few rotations clockwise.

  10. John and Rebecca says:

Moving shapes wasn’t too bad but turning shapes was much harder. We used shape tiles to figure out which way the flags should point.

  11. Miss Carruthers says:

Turning shapes is harder, so don’t worry if you found it tricky. I think the flag is hard because part of it is just a line which can be easy to miss.

  12. Good Afternoon, do i need to to the second page of worksheet 10?

  13. Catherine says:

I went through the maths activities. Some bits were tricky such as moving some larger shapes and turning some shapes. We will keep working at it.

  14. I’ve done my math no problem homework

  15. Part 2 was trickier than the first bit.
