Hello Class 1!

Today we are going to review all of our learning about fractions (I am sorry, last week some of you asked for more BBC Bitesize activities but they don’t seem to have any for fractions for Year 1).

Workbook: 1B
Chapter: 14
Pages: 74-76

Print the MNP pages here: Maths 10.06.20

Challenge: Try these tricky challenge questions. Either print the sheet or look at the sheet on your computer and work out in your book. The answers are there too for you to check with an adult when you finish.

Reviewing Fractions

Remember when we find half of an object or objects, both groups must be equal. That means both halves must be the same size. When we half something we are making 2 groups.

This means colour in half of the shape. The shape is made up of 4 smaller squares so we need to colour in half of 4.
Half of 4 is 2 so we should colour in 2 small squares, like this:

To find half of a group of objects we must share them equally into 2 groups. One of the groups represents half.
Here are 12 butterflies:

To find half of the butterflies we need to share them into two equal groups and then count how many butterflies in one group.

That means half of 12 is 6!

But what if we want to find a quarter? Do you remember that a quarter means we share something into 4 equal groups. A way to remind yourself about quarters is to look at the beginning of the word ‘qua’ it’s almost ‘quad’ which means 4. Think of a quad bike. A quad bike had 4 wheels.

So, let’s go back to finding a quarter. Here are 20 strawberries:

To find a quarter, we need to share the strawberries into 4 equal groups and then count the number of strawberries in one group. Like this:

That means a quarter of 20 is 5!

Now try the MNP review.
Please ask if you need any help!
