Today’s task: Find different ways to make 4. Choose 4 objects and split them into two groups. Tell an adult about the number sentence. For example, three and one makes four. Then try to split them a different way to make a new number sentence.

If you are feeling confident after a few turns, have a try at recording your number sentences in your own way.

  1. I put my objects in to these groups:
    2 objects + 2 objects = 4 objects
    3 objects + 1 object = 4 objects
    4 objects + 0 objects = 4 objects

  3. Esme picked up three types of objects: books, coins and circles. She sorted them out in three sets by type. In every set, she split its objects into different kind of two groups which eventually made 4.
    She was also keen to create shapes out of these objects. She said that she designed the French tower -apparently Eiffel Tower- and London Tower.
    She really enjoyed this task

    Adelaide did 2 groups of 2 small bunnies (from a board game) , then one group of 3 bunnies here and 1 bunny here and then 4 bunnies here and zero there.

  8. Hello Miss Siswick, Mrs Knowler and Nursery friends,
    We counted:
    2+2=4 with milk bottle lids
    1+3=4 with dolly people
    0+4=4 with crayons
    Then we mixed the objects and did the same above. Then we practiced doing “+” and “=” on paper and Grace knows where the += button is on mummy’s computer!

    Joseph & Sophia enjoyed the number 4 exercise.

    They each took 4 coins and split them into different groups and counted them (3 coins plus 1 coin, 2 coins plus 2 coins).
    They also wrote down the number 4 several times on a whiteboard.

    We then cut fruits into 4 separate pieces (strawberries, banana and apple) and we ate them for breakfast !

    Group of 1 + Group of 3
    Group of 2 + Group of 2
    Group of O + Group of 4

  11. I start off with 1 and then 2 and then 3 and then 4. Put half and it was 2 plus 2. 3 and 1.

    You can show the groups on your fingers, draw pictures, make marks or write the numbers. I can’t wait to see them.

  13. Caspian chose 4 large kitchen rolls and split them into groups .

    2+2 =4
    Then he placed 3 rolls on the top of each other and left one on the side and counted .
    3+1 =4

    Then did the same with 4 rolls and counted
    4+0 =4
    and wrote number 4 four times .
    Caspian continued to make me guess different numbers.

  14. With help Nicolas made number sentences out of marbles. He had a go at writing them as well (will send a photo).

    1+1+1+1=4
    2+2=4
    3+1=4

    1 group – 0+4=4
    2 group- 2+2=4
    3 group- 3+1=4

    4 is my favourite number 🙂 I used 4 magformers magnetics to add 2+2, 3+1, 4+0.

    “ I put 1 stone in one group and 3 stones in other group and it makes 4. I put 2 stone in one group and 2 stones in other group. I put 4 stone in one group. I put one stone in one group, another stone in one group, another stone in one group and another stone in one group.”
