Good Morning, Reception!

I hope you’ve  all had a lovely Easter. I am going to be setting your blogs from now on and I can’t wait to see how well you are all doing with your Maths.

Todays Maths tasks are all about addition. Try to find the answers to the tasks by counting on from the number in your head or on your fingers. For example, If the problem was:  ‘There are three cats and then three more cats come along. How many cats are there now?’ -You put the first number in your head (3) and then count on 3 more (4 5 6) to find the answer.

You can record your answers in any way that you choose. You might choose to record using real objects or by drawing  pictures and then write the number for the final answers or you might choose to record using a number sentence such as 3+3=6. You can tell me your answers in the comments or send me a photo of your recorded work.

First try these two tasks:

For these two tasks, you can choose how many cats and dogs to add on:

For the last task, you can choose how many cats and dogs to add together:

I am looking forward to hearing how you all got on.

Love from Miss Siswick.

  1. Hi Miss Siswick! Harlow worked out these sums:

    6 + 3 = 9
    4 + 2 = 6
    5 + 5 = 10
    6 + 7 = 13
    4 + 8 = 12

  2. We had fun counting and drawing cats and dogs!
    The first one is 6 dogs + 3 cats = 9

  3. 1/ There are 6 dogs and 3 cats. 3+6=9
    2/ There are 4 cats and 2 dogs. 2+4=6

There are 9 cats & dogs in the 1st picture and 6 in the 2nd picture.

  6. Hi Miss Siswick. I hope you had a peaceful and relaxing Easter break. Thank you for helping to create Reception’s blogs.
Amber’s addition is good but she often writes her numbers backwards. I’ve uploaded the cats and dogs addition exercises to the homework portal. so you can see.

  7. Miss Siswick says:

This is very common and comes with practice. Could she practice writing them with a whiteboard pen on the laminated sheet that came with James’ homework sheet?

  8. (1) 6+3=9
    (2) 4+2=6
    (3) 5+5=10
    (4) 6+6=12
    (5) 25+25=50

  9. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Reception. Great addition. Don’t forget when counting on, that you need to put the first number in your head and then count on out loud or on your fingers. So, the number sentence for the first sum is 6+3=9 not 3+6=9 even though the answer is the same.

  10. Hi Miss Siswick!
I hope you had nice holidays and a nice day!
    The first task is 6+3=9
    The second task is 4+2=6
And we’ve drawn many other cats and dogs on the 3 following tasks.

  11. Good morning Miss Siswick

    6 ? + 3 ? = 9
    4 ? + 2 ? = 6
    Then I drew
    2 cats ? to play with the 5 dogs ? =7
    1 dog ? to play with the 6 ? = 7

    Finally I drew
    2 ? and 1 ? = 3
    Mummy will send the email

  12. Hi Miss Siswick, Juliana worked on these sums and sent you a picture of the cats and dogs tasks.

  13. Hi Miss Siswick,
    6 ? + 3 ? = 9
    4 ? + 2 ? = 6

    I added 8 ???????? to the 5????? = 13
    I added 5????? to the 6??????= 11
    I added 7??????? to 5?????=12

  14. My dad asked me if there are 2 ? and 1 ?, how many legs do we have…
    A cat ? has 4 legs, so for 2 ? we have 4+4=8 legs.
    A dog ? has 4 legs, so for 1 ? we have 4 legs.
    8+4=12

  15. Mikey enjoyed this maths challenge. His answers are 9 and 6.

  16. 6+3=9
    4+2=6

  17. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Reception. You are really impressing me with your wonderful addition. Keep up the good work!

  18. Rocco wants to add 1 cat to the game, so 5 dogs + 1 cat =6

Rocco wants to add 2 dogs to the game, so 6 cats + 2 dogs =8

  19. For the last part Rocco wants to choose 3 cats and 4 dogs, so 3 + 4= 7

  20. Good morning!
6 dogs and 3 cats playing in the sun. 6+3=9
2 dogs and 4 cats playing in the sun.2+4=6

  21. Chiara found 9 cats and dogs on the 1st picture and 6 cats and dogs on the second exercise.
she found 5 dogs and add 8 cats = 13 but it was difficult for her to find the total
she found 6 cats and add 6 dogs but again it is difficult for her to add more than her total fingers.

  22. Miss Siswick says:

When you are counting on, you only need your fingers to count on the second number.
For 5 dogs joined by 8 cats, you say 5 and then count on 8 on your fingers like this 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 to get the answer.
For 6 dogs and 6 cats, you say 6 and then count on 6 on your fingers like this 7 8 9 10 11 12 to get the answer.

    Have another try, Chiara.

  23. Marcus liked this task and did his answers as sums. We uploaded a photo for you to see!

  24. Miss Siswick says:

Great adding and recording, Marcus. Well done.

  25. Hi Miss Siswick,
    6 dogs + 3 cats = 9
    4 cats + 2 dogs = 6

  26. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Nico. Your recording was very clear.

  27. Hello again Miss Siswick,
