The phonic sounds we are going to practice in the next few week are spelled in many different ways in English. For example, the ‘ee’ sound is spelled differently in these words; tree, sea, priest, even, he, baby.  Children will encounter these different spellings when reading books.

In Phonics however, we are focussing on reading and writing using these phonemes; ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, at, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure and er.

This is because this helps early writers to sound out, read and write words and simple sentences in ways which match their spoken sounds, without support from an adult, which is the goal for the end of Reception Class. We aim for all children to become ‘phonetically fearless’ and to enjoy their reading and writing. The ‘correct’ spellings come later, when the child is a more confident writer. Therefore, please don’t correct spellings if the way that they are written matches the phonic sound that they have learned and can be read by your child and others.

Good Morning, Reception.

Well done for your hard work in Phonics yesterday.

Today, we are going to practice the digraph ‘ee’. A diagraph means two letters together which make one sound.

Practice saying the sound ‘ee’ and making the ‘ee’ action (Make donkey ears with your hands and say ‘ee-or'(emphasising the ee) like a donkey!)

Challenge: Can you think of any more words with the ‘ee’ sound and write them by yourself?

    We read all the words on our own, and we wrote down the words from the pictures. We also watch Alphablocks today and they were doing the diagraph ‘ee’. We came up with the words, sheep, bee, beef, Wheel, seeds and beetle. We love Geraldine.
