The phonic sounds we are going to practice in the next few week are spelled in many different ways in English. For example, the ‘igh’ sound is spelled differently in these words; high, life, silent, design, by and tie.  Children will encounter these different spellings when reading books.

In Phonics however, we are focussing on reading and writing using these phonemes; ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, at, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure and er.

This is because this helps early writers to sound out, read and write words and simple sentences in ways which match their spoken sounds, without support from an adult, which is the goal for the end of Reception Class. We aim for all children to become ‘phonetically fearless’ and to enjoy their reading and writing. The ‘correct’ spellings come later, when the child is a more confident writer. Therefore, please don’t correct spellings if the way that they are written matches the phonic sound that they have learned and can be read by your child and others.                    Many thanks for your support in this.

Good Morning, Reception.

Well done for your hard work in Phonics yesterday.

Today, we are going to practice the trigraph ‘igh’. A trigraph means three letters together which make one sound.

Practice saying the sound ‘igh’ and making the ‘igh’ action (Salute and say ‘igh igh Captain!’)

Can you sound out and read these words?

Can you sound out and write these words by yourself?

Can you write a sentence by yourself about one of the pictures?

Challenge: Can you think of any more words with the ‘igh’ sound and write them by yourself?

I know that Geraldine the Giraffe is very popular, so here she is learning the ‘igh’ sound too! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OYCR2RZ4ZYY

I am looking forward to hearing all about your phonics today.
Love from Miss Siswick

PRINTABLE VERSION: R Phonics Wednesday

It would really help me if you could upload photos  straight to the media file (instructions are here: sharing photos and files) as they get to me more quickly and easily as they don’t have to go via the office and my e-mail. Please can either your child’s name or face (but not both) be visible on any photos. Many thanks.

    Good morning Miss Siswick,
We read all the letters and wrote down night, light, bright from the pictures.
We made a sentence with night. There are stars in the night.
    We sent you a picture.
    We loved Geraldine!

  5. Hello Miss Siswick!
I had no problem sounding out and saying the sounds.
My sentence is: ‘My night light is bright’
My extra words are: Bright, Sight, Might.

  6. Madeleine says:

    Good morning all,

Madeleine was able to read and say the sound IGH and read the words.

  11. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, Juliana.

  12. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, everyone, for your wonderful phonics this morning. You have all been working very hard practicing reading and writing words with the ‘igh’ sound.

I am very sorry that I am replying so late this morning as I was phoning people at home. Hopefully, I will get to talk to each of you in the next few days. Love from Miss Siswick.

  13. Good morning,

Maya did very well with her writing. We’ll send a picture. She wrote the sentence ‘The light in the night’. She found it difficult to come up with an ‘igh’ sound but she managed to think of ‘buy’ and ‘nigh’.

    She also read Leek Hotpot!

  14. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Maya. I could read all of your words today.

  15. Marcus did well with his reading and writing today. He enjoyed thinking up sentences and was pleased that he made one with 3 “igh” words in it.
He also wanted to say (I’m not forcing him to!) that he’s not really bored although he says in his sentence that he is, it’s just because he thought it was a good way to use “sighing”! We’ve sent a photo..

  16. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Marcus. I am glad that you are not really bored and that you are enjoying your writing.

  17. Nancy Bear says:

Florence is writing her sentences independently but she does often miss quite a few sounds in the words. Should I be sounding them out for her?

  18. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Florence. You are writing sentences all by yourself.
I would let her write them independently first. Then choose two or three words with letters missing for you to sound out and write together underneath.

  19. Miss Siswick says:

Well done; Harlow, Moses, Madeleine, Rosa, Luca, Sybille, Tim and Rocco. Great writing, all of you.
