Good morning Class 4!

As I am sure you remember, last week we began our new Religious Education topic on Pentecost, focusing on ‘serving’.
Last week we looked at what happened on the day of the Pentecost and then used what we had learnt to unpick and compare artists’ interpretations of this.

This week we will look at what happened after the Apostles spoke to the gathered people in the power of the spirit.

The power of the Holy Spirit is for all Christians and all are called to share the Gospel message.  The Good News of Jesus is for the whole world.  The event is celebrated in Christian churches on the Feast of Pentecost.

We cannot keep silent (based on Acts 4:1-26)

The friends of Jesus were full of new life and could not stop telling everyone about Jesus.
Their minds and hearts were full of all he had done and said.
When they went to the temple to pray they talked to people and crowds gathered round them.

They helped the poor and the sick.
Some of the officials in the temple were very annoyed about everything that was happening.
One day they had Peter and John arrested and put them in prison.

The next day all the council officials assembled and had Peter and John brought before them.
“We’ve heard that you are going about preaching about Jesus and healing.
What right do you have to do this?” they asked.

Peter and John were not afraid, “Whatever good we do,” said Peter, “we do in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
You crucified him, but God raised him from the dead.” The whole council were amazed that two very ordinary men were not afraid, and were able to speak out boldly.

They discussed the matter, and then ordered the disciples never to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John were not frightened by any of their threats and said, “We cannot keep silent about the great things that God has done. We have to spread the Good News of Jesus.”

The officials had to let them go because the people were so glad about what they were doing, and the officials did not want to risk a riot.

When Peter and John got back to the other disciples, everyone thanked God for their safety and the courage that the coming of the Holy Spirit had given them.

……………………………………….……………………………………….……………………………………….

The apostles are witnesses to Jesus being raised to new life by God.  The Holy Spirit confirmed their faith in Jesus and gave them the courage they needed to speak out about the Good News of Jesus even when they were threatened.

Task 1:
Try to answer some of these questions on the blog:

·         Why were the friends of Jesus full of new life?

·         Why do you think the officials were annoyed?

·         What happened to Peter and John?

·         How do you think Peter and John felt when they were arrested?

·         What did they say to the council?

·         How did Peter and John show their courage to the officials?

·         What would you have done? Why?

Task 2:
Write a character profile about either Peter or John.

Based on what you have just read, write a short paragraph explaining the following:
– What actions Peter or John took and give reasons for these actions.
– What type of person must they be because of this?

You can write your character profiles on the blog, or write it in your yellow home learning book and then draw a picture of Peter or John to go with it. If you can, send in a photograph of your work as I always love to see what you have done.

If you have any questions, please just ask!
I look forward to reading your ideas!

  3. 1. Peter and John said to the council that whatever good they do they do in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

2.The friends of Jesus were full of new life because of what Jesus had told them and done.

3.When Peter and John were arrested I don’t think that they were scared.

  6. Great answers Holly! I agree with what you have written, sometimes it is hard to stand up for what you believe in but here Peter and John stayed strong and trusted that God was looking over them.

  7. Hello everyone. Here are my answers for the questions.

    Task one:
Try to answer some of these questions on the blog:

    * Why were the friends of Jesus full of new life?
They were very happy that Jesus was alive.

    * Why do you think the officials were annoyed?
They did not want people to spread the Good News.

    * What happened to Peter and John?
Peter and John were arrested by the officials.

    * What did they say to the council?
They said,“ Whatever good we do we do in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. You crucified him, but God raised him from the dead.”

    * How did Peter and John show their courage to the officials?
    They spoke boldly.

    * What would you have done? Why?
I would have done the same thing as Peter and John because they followed Jesus’ steps and didn’t give up until they were freed. I also would have done the same thing as Peter and John because I want to be like Jesus and God.

    Task two:
Based on what you have just read, write a short paragraph explaining the following:
    – What actions Peter or John took and give reasons for these actions.
    – What type of person must they be because of this?

The actions that Peter and John took were: that they spread the Good News about Jesus and his rising from the dead and encouraged people to be like Jesus. They also helped the poor and sick people. When Peter and John were arrested, they were not frightened and continued to spread the news. They were able to do this because they believed in Jesus and Jesus helped them from heaven.

I think that Peter and John are both kind and caring people with lots of courage. If they were not brave, they would not continue to spread the good news after they were arrested.

  8. Fantastic answers Sophie!
I agree, Peter and John definitely showed lots of courage! It must have been very worrying when they were arrested but they did not give up because they knew the Good News would bring people peace and hope.

    7. I would’ve stood up to the officials just like Peter and John because I always know that God will be by my side.

  20. Task 1

The officials were anoyed because Peter and John could nog stop saying to everyone The bood News about Jesus Christ.

Peter and John explained the good News to the council and when They said they weren’t scared, they were free!

When Peter and John were arested, they felt happy and they did nog care because they just wanted to spread the Good News about Jesus in Heaven with his Father God.

They Saïd to the council “ whatever good we do, we do it in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.”

I would do the same because that is what Jesus and God attents us to do. This is means it is very good because God only Spears the truth.

    Task 2:
Peter was one of Jesus’s 12 deciples meaning hos really close freind.
He would always follow his footsteps and learn From his lessons that God would ask us to do. Peter would serve Jesus in any ways as he believed Jesus was the Son of God.

Peter was a very nice man because he followed what Jesus said and he helped people walk, see, and hear just after Jesus ‘s resurection.
His actions were really president, brave and resilient because when the council were threatning and trying to frighten him and his friend, John.
