This term, our new topic is Rivers and Flooding!

As you will know from your homework, I have asked you to research somethings about Europe such as the countries and different rivers.

During this topic, we will be learning about the water cycle, rivers, their features and flooding.

Although the Curriculum homework is now optional there are a few questions that I would like you to research and answer to help with our learning in class!

Please answer the questions in the comments:
1.   What do you do you already know about rivers?
2.   What causes rain?
3.   What is flooding?

I can’t wait to read them all and I am so excited to start our Spring term topic!

    1. What do you already know about rivers?
I know that the longest river is called River Nile, the start of a river is called a source, the end of a river is called a mouth, the shortest river is called Roe River, the biggest river in the UK is the Severn, the second biggest river in the UK 🇬🇧 is the River Thames and the water flows into the river and comes into the Ocean and sea.
    2. What causes rain? 🌧️
Within a cloud, water droplets condense onto one another, causing the droplets 💧 to grow. When these water droplets get too heavy to stay suspended in the cloud, they fall to Earth as rain.
    3.What is flooding?
A flood is an overflow of water that covers the land that is mostly dry. Flooding starts by heavy rains, a rapid snowmelt or a snow surge from a tropical cyclone or a tsunami in coastal areas.

I am so exited to find out more about this topic.

    1. A river is a natural moving body of water that flows from its source on high ground, across land, and then into another body of water. This could be a lake, the sea, an ocean or even another body of water.
Rivers flow in channels. The bottom of a river is called the river bed, and the sides of the channel are called banks.
*The first longest river in Europe is the Volga river. It is situated in Russia.
*The second longest river in Europe is the Danube. It passes through four capital cities: Vienna (Austria), Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary), and Belgrade (Serbia).
    2. Rain is caused in 3 stages: Evaporation, Condensation and Precipitation. Rain is the liquid form of water that falls from the sky in droplets. Rain water fills lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. It provides the fresh water needed by humans, animals, and plants.
    3. Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster and occur when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry.
Floods are usually caused by heavy rainfall, poor drainage systems and poor absorbent surfaces.
The main types of floods are river floods, coastal floods, sewer floods and flash floods.
I am really looking forward to learn more about this interesting topic.

  3. I know that the biggest river is called the Grand Canyon in America.
Rain is made when tiny drops of water in clouds hit each other.
A flood is when a river overflows. This happens now often because of climate change.
