Good morning Class 4!
How are you all today?

Today we will be starting our new science topic for this term – Living Things and their Habitats.

Did you know?

Of the 1.3 million animals on our planet, over 1 million of them are insects.
A sea cucumber is in fact an animal.
Scientists believe that there about 7 million living things that haven’t been found yet! Many of them may become extinct (die out) before they can be discovered.
For every person on Earth there are 1.5 billion insects.

Seeing as we are looking at poems in English, I thought you would enjoy this poem about living things…
Click here to read it: Living Things Poem

Task 1:

Before reading further, write on the blog what you think makes something a living thing.
You could discuss this with someone at home too and see what they think.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Although all living things look different to each other even if they are the same species, there are 7 things that all living things do.

These 7 things are called life processes. A thing is only living if it does all 7 of these life processes:

Movement (Animals move their body. Plants turn or grow towards the sun.)
Reproduction (Animals have babies. New plants grow from seeds)
Sensitivity (Animals react to changes in the temperature around them. Plants grow towards sunlight and send their roots deeper if they need to find more water)
Nutrition (Living things need food. Plant make their own food using energy from the sun. Animals eat plants and/or other animals)
Excretion (Plants and animals both need to get rid of waste gas and water. Animals also need to get rid of other waste products)
Respiration (Plants and animals use oxygen in the air to turn food into energy)
Growth (Young animals grow into adults and plant seedlings grown in to mature plants.)

We can remember the life processes by remembering ‘MRS NERG’

M – movement
R – reproduction
S – sensitivity

N – nutrition
E – excretion
R – respiration
G – growth

Task 2:

Create a poster about one of the life processes. You might need to research a little bit more about it and you will definitely need to include examples of animals and plants. You could include drawings or if you’re lucky enough to have a printer you might print some pictures out. Or maybe you’re a technology whizz and you want to make your poster online. When you have finished your poster, send it to me and I will post it on the blog. Hopefully we will have a few posters for each life process to help us remember them all!

If you have any questions, please just ask!
Enjoy and good luck!

From Miss Lee 🙂

  1. Hello everyone, how are you all feeling today?
Here are my thoughts for task1:

    Task 1 :

If something is alive, it should move, breathe, reproduce feel and grow.

  2. Great I can’t wait to see it!

  3. I really want to see your poster!

  4. Hi Sophie,
I tried to upload your poster but when I clicked on it it said the file was empty. Could you try sending it again?

  5. a living thing is something that is growing and moving.

  6. Interesting ideas!

  7. i think what makes something living is movement ,sensitivity, growth and reproduction.

  8. Why do you think these things mean something is living?

  9. I think that a living thing is something that can move, eat, breathe and grow.

  10. Good ideas! Why do you think these things mean something is living?

  11. Karter Clap For NHS today! says:

Hello everyone this is what I found out.

Task 1. If an animal is alive it should reproduce and grow and feel.

  12. Good ideas!

  13. A living thing is something that can breathe eat and grow.?

  14. Well done!

  15. I think that reproduction makes living things because an animal is practically having a baby

  16. Good, what about plants?

  17. TASK 1:

    I think:
    – some sort of body
    – breath
    – growing
    – the need of food
    – cells
are all things that make something a living thing.

  18. Good ideas well done!

  19. TASK 1:
The difference between a living insect and a not living thing is…
1.Insects move and not living things don’t move.
2.Insects eat and not living things don’t eat things.
3.Insects live on the ground and not living things don’t.
4.Insectes grow and not living things don’t grow
    TASK 2:
    I will do the task.

  20. Great, I look forward to seeing your poster!

  21. T1:
If something is alive it should be breathing and have a beating heart.

  22. Good idea… What a out plants, are they living? Do they have a heart?

  23. A living thing must move, grow and eat or drink to live and be strong.

  24. Good ideas Pablo!

  25. A living animal needs to breath, eat, drink, move, grow and reproduce.

  26. Well done!

  27. Task 1.
living things grow, move, breathe and reproduce.

    Task 2.
I made a poster about a certain fish.
    can you guess it?

  28. Good ideas, I’m not sure which fish you have made your poster about but I look forward to seeing it!

  29. Task 1
Hello everybody how are you doing?
I think a living should do all kinds of things us humans can do, but not everything has a face and legs.

  30. Hello Ciana! I am doing well thank you, how are you?
Yes you’re right, for example plants are alive and they do not have a face or legs!

  31. Good morning Miss Lee ?
A living thing is something that eats, moves, breathes and grows. I’m still thinking what do do with the task 2 ?

  32. Hello Clare!
Good ideas, I look forward to seeing your work for task 2!

  33. A living animal is breathing, moving and growing.

  34. Good ideas!

  35. What makes a living thing a living thing is that they can move and they are all ways breathing in air but if you are dead you do not breath and you would be lying still if you are a bug you would be hunting and hiding from your predators but if you where a dead bug you would be laying still
did you know that there are three times more chickens than humans on the world

  36. Some interesting ideas!
No I did not know the fact about chickens! Thank you for sharing!

  37. ?Raimundo Clap for the NHS? says:

Hello, Miss Lee and Class 4,

A living thing is something that can breathe, eat and grow.

Hope we can see each other again sometime! ????

  38. Good ideas Raimundo!
I hope we can all see each other again soon too!

  39. Hello Miss Lee?

    Task 1

    1. Grow
    2. Breath
    3. Eat and drink
    4. Poo and Wee
    5. Move
    6. Have a baby
    7. You need your (five) senses.

  40. Good ideas! Very interesting about your five senses… what about plants? Are they living? Do they have the 5 senses?

  41. Task 1:

If something can move without being told to, breathing, eating , and drinking they are a living thing!

  42. Well done Aisha, some good ideas!

  43. TASK 1:
I think that a living thing is something that should have order, sensitivity or response to the environment, reproduction, adaptation, growth and development, homeostasis, energy processing, and evolution.

  44. Interesting ideas! What do you mean by it should have order?

  45. I think a living thing is something that can move, breathe and grow.
That means that not only humans are living things but also plants and animals.

  46. Yes you’re right, humans are not the only living things!

  47. By the way no I didn’t know that animal fact!
My hypothesis is that there are more people then animals and Insects but together there are less people.

    Does anybody have a hypothesis?
    Good luck and stay safe!

  48. TASK 1:
    1. Body shape
    2. Moves
    3. breathe
    4. Eats and drinks to have energy to grow up
    5. To have five scenes (see, smell, taste, touch, hear)
    6. Live in certain temperatures
    7. Reject waste (food and water)

  49. Very interesting! What about plants? Are they living? Do they have all of the five senses?

  50. Hi miss are we supposed to do our poster in our homework folder?

  51. You can do it in your book, or on paper or on the computer. Whatever works best for you!

  52. Hello Miss Lee and everyone ?

    2)use energy
    3)respond to stimuli
    4)grow and movement
    5)emotion
    6)regeneration of cells
    that is task 1!

  54. Interesting ideas!

  55. Oh Can we do it on paper?
