Big question: Which foods in your fridge are seasonal?

Different fruits and vegetables are ready to eat at different times of the year (in different seasons).

There are four different times in a year and these different times are called the seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

  • What time of year is it now?
  • What time of year is it when leaves turn orange and start to fall off the trees?
  • What time of year is it when all the leaves have fallen off the trees, and it’s colder?
  • What time of year is it when it is warmer and some people start to wear t-shirts?
  • What time of year is it when it can be quite cool, but new flowers like snowdrops are starting to appear?
  • Which season is your birthday in? How about the other people in your family?

This is the seasons when these fruits and vegetables have finished growing and are ready to eat (in the UK). Look at these season cards with your family. Talk about the months that are included in each season. what foods can you see?

  13. Rosa Walters says:

I can now name and identify all the seasons in the correct sequence. Some seasonal foods are still tricky to sound (asparagus, rhubarb), particularly courgettes where the G sounds like J. My favourite autumn foods from the list are blackberries and beetroot. I also like strawberries, tomatoes, apple (without the skin) from the other seasons. I have never eaten rhubarb and would really like to try it someday.

  14. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Rosa. My dad used to grow rhubarb on his allotment so I have eaten lots of rhubarb. It’s not my favourite but let me know if you enjoy it.
