In Year 1 we have daily phonics lessons and we follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme.

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

To support your child at home with reading, it will be most helpful to practise reading, saying and writing our new sounds each week (these can be found on the weekly homework in Google Classroom).

Please click HERE for a full list of phase 2 & 3 sounds we are currently revisiting in class.

If you need support with helping your child to say the sounds correctly, please click HERE.

There are two types of reading book that your child will bring home:

A reading practice book
This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.

A sharing book
Your child will choose their own ‘reading for pleasure’ book from the school library each week. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!

Top tips on how to read stories well
You can support your child by modelling the use of different voices, expression, discussing unfamiliar vocabulary, how to talk about the pictures and predicting what might happen next.
