In Year 2, we have been learning all about the Great Fire of London within our history lessons. In school, we have found out all about how, why and where the fire started and why it continued for so long. We have also found out about the way in which King Charles II planned to rebuilt London. We have created a chronological timeline about the events and have also been able to use primary sources of information, from Samuel Pepys’ diary to the King’s declaration, to find out even more information about what happened at the time. We have learnt that a primary source of information is something that was written or produced at the time of the event, and this is why they are so important!

As an additional task, we were asked to create a home-project which could be used to celebrate all of our knowledge on the topic and to also deepen our understanding. Some of our weekly homework involved research tasks, where we could work with an adult to find out even more about what happened during the Great Fire. We also had some art tasks, writing tasks and DT too! Some of us even made bread, just like Thomas Farriner!

Today, we spent some time sharing our projects with our friends and we all shared some of the facts and information that we had learnt throughout this half term. Our most recent task was to research information about St Paul’s Cathedral and begin to compare the building that burnt down in 1666, to the cathedral that we see today. Some of us shared fantastic drawings, and others had created detailed fact-files that even went back to as early as the time that the Vikings damaged St Paul’s! Once we had discussed with our table groups, some of us chose to speak to the whole class and share some of our research and work that we have completed outside of school. Some of us even mentioned that we would like to do some of this project during the half term! We all spoke clearly, people listened brilliantly and we all showed such respect for each other and the work that we have done.

Well done for all of your fantastic work, Year 2! I am so proud of all of you.
