In Class 5 today we learnt about the amazing discoveries made in Coppergate in the 1970’s.
Around 40,000 Viking artefacts were found during an excavation!

First, we looked on a map to find out where Coppergate is. It is in the North of England, in a place called York! Some of us had been to York before or have family who are from there.

These artefacts prove that the Vikings really did come to Britain. They also tell us a lot about Viking life.
To see more of the artefacts that were found, you can look at this website: https://www.yorkarchaeology.co.uk/viking-images

We took part in our own excavation in our classroom where we rediscovered some artefacts that were originally found in Coppergate. We discussed what the artefacts might be and made comparisons to objects that we use today. This helped us to make comparisons between historical periods; explaining things that have changed and things that have stayed the same.

Did you know that Coppergate got its name from these findings? Coppergate means ‘street of the cup-makers’ and lots of wooden cups and bowls were amongst the artefacts found between 1976 and 1981.
