Last Thursday, Class 6 were invited to meet the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Lady Christabel Flight. We travelled to Westminster City Hall and were greeted by the Mayor in her Parlour. The Parlour was beautifully decorated with paintings and sculptures and had spectacular views over London. Refreshments were provided (which we greatly enjoyed!) and then the Mayor spoke to us about her role and responsibilities. We discovered that there is a Lord Mayor of the City of London and a Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster (don’t get these confused with Boris Johnson, who is Mayor of London, a completely different job!). Next, we were given a tour of the Mayoral Plate Room which houses the stunning treasures of the City of Westminster. These include the amazing Westminster Tobacco Box (some of us had seen this before, displayed in the Wallace Collection), a silver inscribed plate worth 3 million pounds and a ceremonial mace which is used in the Houses of Parliament. We all had a turn at holding the mace- it was extremely heavy! Our next activity was a quiz all about London and then finally it was time to say goodbye. It was an honour to meet the Lord Mayor and we had a very special afternoon.
