This half term, our topic has been Explorers, and the children have absolutely loved it! They have thoroughly enjoyed learning about different explorers and the many ways people have travelled around the world. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and enthusiasm grow throughout the topic.
In Art, we explored the work of Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist famous for her sculptures and her love of polka dots, which appear in many of her creations. The children were fascinated by her unique style and creative approach.
Taking inspiration from both our Explorers topic and Kusama’s artwork, the children created their own clay boats. We began by carefully studying Kusama’s work before designing our own boats—these plans turned out amazing! The children then used clay to sculpt their creations, adding polka dot details using clay tools to reflect Kusama’s signature style.
Once the boats had dried, the children painted them and added sails to complete their designs. The finished pieces were fantastic, and the effort and creativity shown by everyone was truly impressive.
Well done, Year 1—you are amazing artists!
