In Design and Technology, we have been working on our sewing skills!

As part of this subject, it is important that we design, make and evaluate. We learned that we would be making a fish, which will help us to learn and understand the skills that we will then be developing when we move into Year 3 when we make a cushion. We used a fish template, which links to our recent trip to Broadstairs and our work in science where we have been recapping all that we know about animals, food chains and habitats.

For our design, we thought about the colours that we would like to have for our fabric, our thread and also thought about any other details that we would like to include on our final product. Then came the time to make our fish. We watched a video about how to complete a running stitch and then chose our coloured fabric. We were given a length of thread to work with and then began our sewing. It was definitely much trickier than we first thought! Our thread became a bit tangled at times (which you can see in some of our pictures) but we persevered and showed great resilience. Some of us had practiced sewing before so could help our friends when things got a bit tangled. Eventually, we got there!

Later in the week, we worked on decorating our fish. First, we had to cut different pieces of fabric to create the fins for our fish. We used felt-tip to draw our outline and then used scissors to cut out the fabric. This was also quite tricky! We then used special fabric glue to stick these onto our fish, with some support as it was very sticky. We then thought about additional decoration such as eyes, and we also had a material which looked a little bit like scales. Some of us even chose some glitter for our fish! We really enjoyed the opportunity to use our imagination and be creative with our final designs. Next week, we will evaluate our work, considering how well we felt our running stitch went, and how well we were able to stick different materials onto our fish.

We hope that you like our products!

This was a very entertaining activity and difficult at the same time. I had to get so much help with the activity because I tangled my string! I hope everyone enjoyed it too!!!
