In Year 1 we have been completing our first Design and Technology project: Creating a Windmill! Year 1 have really enjoyed this project, and have worked so hard to complete their products.

The key skills our project included are:

Design:

• Learning the importance of a clear design criteria

• Including individual preferences and requirements in a design

Make:

• Making stable structures from card, tape, pipe cleaners and glue

• Learning how to turn 2D nets into 3D structures

• Following instructions to cut and assemble the supporting structure of a windmill

• Making functioning turbines and axles which are assembled into a main supporting structure

Evaluate:

To assess if their product has fit its purpose, and if the turbines of their windmill are able to turn in the wind.

Year 1 have really enjoyed each step of this project, that took place over 3 lessons. At each step of constructing their windmills, Year 1 worked so hard and helped one another to ensure they were cutting and folding their net in the right places, and that their design was fit for their purpose. Year 1 were very patient when it came to cutting, folding and assembling their turbines, the key aspect of our windmills! This step was difficult, but everyone was able to construct their turbines and attach them to their structure. We used pipe cleaners for our axels, which proved very successful when we came to evaluation step. To evaluate the windmills, Year 1 went to the roof to test if their structure held up the turbines, and if the turbines turned in the wind! This was great fun and a true success.

Well done Year 1, your windmills are fantastic!
