This week Year 4 have been working very hard on the ‘Adapting a Biscuit Recipe’ topic in D.T.

We designed our biscuit recipes in groups and thought carefully about the product we were going to create.

We first decided on a group name and selected the a target audience for our biscuits.

With our target audience in mind, we decided on which additional ingredients we would add to the basic biscuit recipe so that our biscuits were the most popular!

We had to be careful because all of the additional ingredients such as raisins, chocolate chips, cinnamon, cocoa powder and sprinkles were priced individually per scoop and our group had to make sure we remained in the £1.99 production budget by creating a running total. The goal was to produce the biscuits for as cheap as possible so that we could make the most profit if they were sold! The children had lots of fun designing a logo for their team and thinking about how they could create packaging for their product which would stand out and reflect their biscuit.

The very next morning we got to work and made our final biscuit recipe! First we prepared ourselves by following food hygiene and safety rules. We tied back hair, washed our hands, rolled up our sleeves and put on some brand new aprons! Our first task was to read the recipe together so that we knew the steps we needed to take. Each group took turns to gather up all of the equipment they would need. After that, we began by creaming together the sugar and butter and adding an egg yolk! It was quite tricky to separate the yolk from the egg white but each group managed to do it very successfully! Then it was time to add the flour. We measured out all of our ingredients in grams using scales and rubbed in the butter into the flour to create a dough. Finally. we added in our additional ingredients from the designs we created the day before.

While the dough was chilling in the fridge we tidied up and washed our equipment. After 15 minutes we were ready to roll out and cut the dough using our chosen biscuit cutter shapes. Mrs O’Neill then kindly baked out biscuits and finished cleaning up the creativity room! Thank you for all of your help!

Finally in the afternoon we had a chance to taste each group’s biscuits and give some feedback about what we liked and thought they could improve on. We then evaluated our biscuits and reflected on how suitable they were for our target audience. They were very tasty!

What skill did you enjoy practicing when baking your biscuit recipe?

The biscuits look so good! Wish I was there to make them. It looks very fun and tasty. My mouth is already watering. The biscuits are amazing. Year four did a very good job making them. My favourite type of biscuit is chocolate, sprinkles and chocolate chips. When my sister got home I really wanted one but she already ate it! Good job Mr Kersys and Ms O’Neill for helping Year Four have an excellent design and technology lesson. But a very good job to Year Four. Keep up the good work!
