In Year 6, we are always looking for ways to improve our independent writing through careful editing and re-drafting.

We edit each piece of writing independently. First, we read what we have written out loud to ourselves and edit anything that doesn’t make sense. Next, we read it out loud again and edit any punctuation that is not correct. Then, we read it out loud again and edit any spelling that is not correct. Finally, we improve our word choices by adding/using more powerful nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbials and conjunctions.

Every few pieces of writing, we peer edit after our independent editing. This gives us the chance to read our work to our partner and also listen to any suggestions for corrections or improvements from our partners. We can also ‘magpie’ ideas for our writing from our partner’s writing and add it to our own.

Today, we were editing an alternative ending that we had written, inspired by our last class text ‘The Tiger Rising’ by Kate Di Camillo.

What changes did you make to your after your peer editing, Year 6?
