This week, Year 1 have been busy making exciting discoveries in maths as we explored the concepts of direction and position. We began by discussing what these terms mean and then investigated them in more detail through practical activities.

Building on our previous learning about fractions, including halves and quarters of shapes and objects, we made connections by learning how to make quarter and half turns. From there, we moved on to understanding forwards and backwards movement, explored what it means to be above and below, and practised identifying our lefts and rights.

To put our learning into action, we headed up to the roof for some hands-on fun! We started with a game of “Left or Right”, where the children had to raise the correct arm when prompted. This game really challenged their understanding, and they showed fantastic confidence and accuracy.

Next, we paired up for a game where the children had to direct their partners to a destination using their new vocabulary and knowledge of position and direction. The class demonstrated excellent teamwork and communication, applying their skills brilliantly.

Well done, Year 1! This was a fantastic way to finish the week. We are so proud of your enthusiasm, effort, and growing confidence in maths!
