This week in Reception we have been exploring our new class topic ‘My Community.’ We have been learning that a community is a place where people live, work, play and solve problems together.

We have learnt some new vocabulary throughout the week including church, school, family, friends, houses, flats, shops and park.

We looked at photographs of people and places in our community and shared our own experiences of visiting these places. We enjoyed painting our favourite places and made a wonderful display outdoors to help us remember what our community means.

We also explored Marylebone Square, this has been a building project just opposite St Vincent’s school. We looked at what the building site looked like at the start of the project and what has changed. We talked about how there are lots of flats and homes in our community. We used our outdoor construction area to become builders and we built our own flats just like the ones in Marylebone Square.

We had a special circle time to talk about our family members and how they are special to us. We looked at some of our own photographs that we had brought in of our families and talked about their names and why they are special. We drew our own family portraits together.

It is important to learn about our community. This knowledge helps us to learn our locality to know where our own house us or the local shops are. Our local schools, church, park, playground and library are also oart of the community. 😀

  7. Learning about our community requires a lot of knowledge. I bet you did a good job.
