This week in Geography, we have been learning about the seven continents of the world. We discovered that a continent is a very large area of land made up of many countries.
We began our learning by singing our favourite continents song before exploring the seven continents in more detail. As our discussions developed, we made an exciting discovery – children in our class have family connections to six of the world’s seven continents! This was a wonderful way to celebrate the diversity within our classroom.
Many of the children were keen to share interesting facts about the continents their families come from, as well as other places around the world. We were impressed by how much knowledge they already had.
Our next challenge was to identify and locate each of the seven continents on a world map. The children completed this task with great confidence and demonstrated excellent recall of their learning. They were also able to explain what a continent is in their own words.
To extend their learning, the children created a mini fact file about a continent of their choice. They produced some beautiful work, filled with fascinating facts and colourful illustrations.
Year 1 are thoroughly enjoying this topic so far, and we are looking forward to discovering even more about our amazing world in the coming weeks!
