On Monday, we launched our new topic, Coasts and Climate, with an exciting and engaging start. The children began by sharing their ideas and predictions about what the topic might involve, and their enthusiasm grew even more when they learned it includes a fantastic upcoming trip to Broadstairs Beach in Kent.
To set the scene, we enjoyed one of the highlights of a seaside visit by having a refreshing ice lolly. This fun treat helped create a real sense of being at the coast and sparked excitement for the learning ahead.
We then began exploring how coastal areas compare to where we live. The children discovered that we are located in Westminster, which is part of London, within England, and ultimately the United Kingdom. They were fascinated to realise that we actually live quite close to the coast.
Using Google Earth, the class explored a range of famous coastlines from around the world, observing their unique features up close. We looked at Broadstairs Beach, Brighton Beach, Bondi Beach, the Giant’s Causeway, and Waikiki Beach. Each child then chose one of these locations and explained why they would like to visit it.
Overall, it was a fantastic start to our new topic—full of curiosity, discovery, and excitement—and we are all looking forward to continuing our learning journey.
