This week, we started our new history topic which is all about Ancient Greece!
To begin our learning and to draw us into the world of Greece, we spent the afternoon immersed in all-things Greek architecture. We learned about the Parthenon which is part of the Acropolis. We learned that it was built as a temple to the Greek god, Athena, and was ultimately converted into a Christian church in the 6th century. We learnt that the decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of classical Greek art, and the Parthenon is considered an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, democracy, and Western civilisation.
As we were sketching an infamous building, it was important for us to understand more about architectural drawings. We recapped some of our knowledge on the Ancient Egyptians as they were one of the first civilisations to record their architectural drawings and designs. The Ancient Greeks also created architectural drawings with detailed designs for buildings like the Parthenon. Greek architects used wax tablets to create sketches, and these were then transferred onto parchment paper.
As we were going to be sketching the Parthenon and our learning objective in art asked us to communicate movement, mood and feeling as well as using shadows and reflections, we had to remind ourselves of different techniques for sketching. We looked at a range of photographs of the Parthenon for inspiration and reference to look at.
Throughout the afternoon, we spent time sketching our versions of the Parthenon and were also able to nibble on a range of Greek foods. We had pita bread, houmous, tzatziki and olives too!
It was a great afternoon which made us all feel really excited for our summer history topic.
- What are you most looking forward to learning about?
- What would you do differently if you were to sketch the Parthenon again?
