On our first day back after the Easter half term break, Year 4 made an exciting start to their new History topic, diving into the fascinating world of the Tudors and Shakespeare!

To begin, we explored who the Tudors were and why they are such an important part of British history. We started off with a class brainstorm to see what we already knew about the Tudors and discussed this with our learning partners before sharing with the class.  The Tudors only ruled for a very short time (1485-1603) but their monarchs are known as very powerful kings and queens of that period because of how they ruled the country.

We then turned our attention to Tudor portraits, discovering how monarchs used art to display their wealth, status, and importance. By carefully observing the details within the portraits such as clothing, jewels and symbols, we could understand about how each ruler wanted to be seen by their kingdom.

Inspired by what we had learned, it was our time to became artists! Using sketching techniques and oil pastels, we created our own self portraits to imagine if we were Tudor kings and queens. The results were fantastic, with each piece showing thoughtful attention to detail and creativity to show how important we are! They will now live on our History display for all visitors to see!

Well done, Year 4 for such a brilliant start to the topic. How did you find creating your own self portraits?
