This week was ‘Other Faiths’ week in RE and this term the other faith is Judaism. The week began with learning about the story of the Exodus and we were fortunate to have Hannah and Suzy from the Jewish Museum London visit Year 3 to facilitate a workshop about how the story of the Exodus is remembered at Passover.
The children were given seder plates and cards which depicted foods that would be eaten during the ceremonial feast of Passover. Hannah and Suzy read the Story of the Exodus and made links between the foods eaten and the events of the story. We discussed what symbolism is and discovered that the Charoset represents the cement used in the building of the pyramids, the bitter herbs represents the suffering of the slaves and the Matzah represents the hurry the slaves were in to escape. It was a very interactive and fun workshop as well as informative.
To follow up on the workshop, we created our own seder plates by drawing the different foods and labelling each with their symbolism and meaning. We finished by discussing how people prepare for and celebrate Passover. It has been a very enlightening, interesting and enjoyable week. Thank you to Mr Kersys for organising the week and to the Jewish Museum London for a great workshop!
