This half term in Maths, we have been learning about place value and addition and subtraction. To demonstrate our understanding of place value, we used dienes to represent numbers. We worked well with our learning partners to show how many tens and ones there were within the numbers given to us. To challenge us further, we raced against each other to see which groups were the fastest. We then used this to add single digits to the numbers that we made and represented. We saw that when the digits in our ones column add together to equal a number less than 10, our tens will not change or increase in value.

Our understanding of addition and subtraction has built on our knowledge of place value, and we have used different methods to support our understanding of these processes and calculations. Our Power Maths learning shows us ways that we can visualise how to add and subtract, and we have found that making ten can be really helpful, especially when completing mathematical problems in our heads. This means that we need to partition numbers, in order to use our number bonds and make addition easier. In our workbooks, we have been able to use pictures and tens frames, and we have also used manipulatives within our lessons. We focused on embedding our understanding and practiced working with our learning partner. We took turns to add and subtract different values, seeing the way in which this influenced our answers.
