As part of our work towards making our school more environmentally friendly, Year 5 (now Year 6) recently took on a very exciting project: planning our very own Meat-Free Monday!
We began by learning about the impact that our food choices can have on the environment. Producing food uses land, water and energy, and meat, particularly red meat, generally produces more greenhouse gas emissions than many vegetarian alternatives. This means that choosing more plant-based meals and eating less meat can be one small way we can help to reduce our carbon footprint and care for our planet.
We shared what we had learned in an assembly, encouraging everyone to think about the small changes we can make to look after our common home. We then worked with our school catering company, Stir, and Miss Coleman, to turn our ideas into action!
Stir gave us three different menu choices and Year 5 went around the school to collect votes from every class. After counting all of the votes, the winning choices were… onion bhaji burgers or vegetarian enchiladas with wedges! There was even chocolate shortbread for dessert.
Although our Meat-Free Monday happened a little later than we had originally planned, we were so pleased to see our idea become a reality. It was fantastic to see the whole school getting involved in a project that began in our classroom and turned into a whole-school action.
Most importantly, we hope that our Meat-Free Monday has helped everyone to think about how our everyday choices can make a difference. Looking after our world does not always require huge changes. Sometimes, small changes made by lots of people can have a really positive impact.
A big thank you to SM for taking such wonderful pictures of our delicious lunch!
